2020 Olympics

I missed the announcement a couple of months ago so have only just seen that it's between Tokyo, Istanbul and ... Madrid.

How the hell can Madrid afford to host this? They're going to the ECB with a begging bowl just to keep the country running: where are they going to find the £5 to 10 billion pounds to host the Olympics? Which financial institutions are going to lend that sort of money to a broke country with a dodgy credit rating? It would be like lending a few hundred million to Pompey.

Interestingly, Istanbul is the favourite but I gather the IOC isn't keen on it hosting the Euros that same summer. It looks like Turkey would have to drop the bid for Euros to get the Olympics - which is surely good news for the Scotland, Wales and Ireland bid?

Already been said that the bidding process for the 2020 world cup is re-opened but countries that may bid are waiting until Turkey officially pull out. England have not ruled out bidding.

But it's the euros in 2020 as said above.

After the Olympics, Eufa should take note how well the event went. As for Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland bidding, shouldn't be allowed. They are only entering a bid so they can have their teams automatically qualify for something they would otherwise never get near and it is at the expense of at least one team that qualifies on merit, irrespective of the fact that they are, I believe, increasing the number of teams in the finals.

Er.. Ireland were in this year's Euro championship. All three of those teams are currently ranked in the top 24 European teams according to FIFA (although Scotland only just sneaks in).

The main question I want answering - perhaps one of the finance experts on NSC can help - is how Spain can possibly raise the money to host the Olympics. I'm completely baffled.

Istanbul favourite for 2020 Olympics.

They will know in December of this year, and if they win it will withdraw their bid for the Euros.

It's probably done by a stupid man who is talking out of his ass, but let's worry about this when the announcement comes theough! When is that btw?

Interesting choices there. Has there ever been a joint bid before? And was it from two countries?

If 2020 is Istanbul, I can't see it going to Baku, Kiev, Doha or Dubai in 2024. And we've had two in US in the last 30 years, might be time for a break. Not sure it would go to Europe again either

I reckon Nairobi or Durban would be a good call.

If Madrid raises the money to bid, I hope the IMF etc tell them where to stick their bail out.

On those 2024 cities, I think Baku sounds like fun. The Azerbaijan Olympics  all paid for with oil money of course. Baku is a rich city in a poor country.

The IOC would love Durban: attractive city and I'm pretty sure there hasn't been an Olympics in Africa before, so it ticks lots of boxes.

Haven't the IOC stated pretty clearly that they will never again award it to a non capital city? (I think obviously they'd waive this for a nation's PRIMARY city, where that is not their capital - eg Sydney, Rio). I think this would rule out Tulsa, St.Petersburg, Durban, Buffalo, etc.

Durban at this time of year wouldn't be so great though.

I thought Japan and Turkey were up shit creek as well?

According to the CIA World Fact Book, Turkey's GDP grew at 8 percent last year - if that's up shit creek, I'd love to know how you'd define Greece or Spain (or UK for that matter)

They should let Brighton have it, football at the Amex, swimming and boxing at King Alfred, build the Olympic stadium down dukes mound. Perfect.

Didn't worry us..... and our national debt in 2011 (latest available figures) was £1,000,000,000
