Bhasvic? Any thoughts....

My eldest lad is in the process of looking at colleges as he's in his GCSE year at school. We live in Eastbourne. He doesn't want to go anywhere in Eastbourne, but has considered Sussex Downs Lewes, Bexhill Sixth Form College and now seems quite keen on Bhasvic. I'd be very interested to hear from any parents or students, current or previous, as to how they would judge the college.

My nephew has done one year studying quite a few 'ologys', seems more than happy and is staying on for another two years.
This is at Bexhill SFC

Judging by how El Pres has turned out, I'd say that going to BHASVIC would give any student a head start in the finer nuances of porn :smile:

Too far back- but the old man worked there circa 1990 as a porter/caretaker just before retirement......he loved it..............as an aside i did once see (Dyke Rd side) a car upside down on it's roof in the grounds of the college many moons ago-how does that happen?

I went there for the past 2 years, its a fantastic College and really helped me get in to Uni. I would highly recommend it!

I was there 15 years ago. Great college and great preparation for uni. From what I've seen and heard, it's only getting better.

My daughter went to BHASVIC 10 years or so ago. She got 3As and went onto Cardiff Uni where she got a 2:1. It certainly did the job then. I have no idea about now. I would support where your son wishes to go, provided it is reasonable. If he makes the choice and is happy, the chances are he will do better than any alternative.

Sat here with my lad now who has just started at Brighton Uni after 2 years A levels at BHASVIC. He says educationally they are excellent (ie they will make sure you get the grades you're capable of - they work you hard) but on the days when you don't have planned lectures the organisation of other stuff is very poor.

Based on what I saw as a parent I'd agree. The approach to maths, for example, was brutal - huge pressure early on to weed out those the college thought not up to it with many dropping out (in hindsight probably a good thing). The college also have a deal of some sort with Brighton Uni - so when it comes to offers, grades will be significantly lower for BHASVIC students than other colleges. May be a factor.

My daughter went to Lewes (4 years ago) and did OK there, but wasn't positive about either the lecturers or the college. She got the grades she needed for Uni but would probably have done so anywhere so difficult to judge the college on her experience.

If you have any specific questions happy to consult junior - he's pretty level headed and will give a sensible response.

I was there 1974-80. Loved it and went to a reunion a few months ago with fellow classmates and some of our old teachers. The principal has just retired but he oversaw an excellent transformation and growth, combined with excellent academic results. Absque Labore Nihil always works!

I also learnt excellent shoplifting skills when it came to techniques for clearing the top shelf of newsagents within a mile resident of the school/college. Set me up for life.

Very good in getting a pupil ready for University and achieving as much as they can. However they don't chase assignments so the pupil needs to be highly motivated otherwise they will miss out. - No doubt this is part of the getting ready for university.

I took my boy to Lewes tonight , we are also looking at bhasvic and varndean, seemed quite good at Lewes.

My wife took our son to Lewes tonight. They enjoyed the chance to have a look and chat to staff.

Thanks everyone for all the comments. They really are helpful. My reservation is the distance. He'd have to get a train very early from Eastbourne, about half 7 and change at Lewes in order to get there on time. That would not be so hard in the summer but in more inclement weather?

Do they do the course at Eastbourne? Sussex Downs rather than Lewes

That, has been playing on my mind.

Even when they were OK (pre dispute obviously) the service from here (Wivelsfield for us which in theory should be so easy for Lewes) was poor - we bought our eldest a car for her second year instead of relying on the trains.
