Your support is not that great
I'm glad someone else feels this way. I even have to turn the radio off when her voice appears on a trail. That fake awe in her voice. That incessant fake laugh. Those pauses to absorb the supposed magnitude of what she's just said. That RIDICULOUS emphasis on EVERY third word she UTTERS. It drives me MENTAL.
So much so that I'm increasingly weaning myself off 6Music. For the past two days I've been on non-stop Spotify, and have discovered some new bands that really intrigue me. Whereas on 6Music I would have heard the same two Ramones songs by now, and one of three tracks by Bow Wow Bleeding Wow.
But I do like Cerys very much, and Lauren Laverne is OK, and Marc Riley is fine. Hobbs, Keaveney and Lamacq ... no thanks.
Never been a 5L man so didn't vote but it's because my two radio defaults are Today (except Thought for the Day, when will this tiresome outdated brain sludge get binned? "Today I read in a newspaper that teenage children are increasingly playing video games to the detriment of face to face socialising. However, it has allowed them to develop greater friendship circles on line, albeit they are devoted to shooting things. Not all 6 Music though. Cerys goes from the sublime to the absolutely ridiculous and as also accurately pointed out by [MENTION=3736]Mr Banana[/MENTION] Mary-Anne has turned in to a soft spoken parody of a parody. I can't listen to Amy Lame because of something a friend said on our car journey back from Liverpool at the end of the first PL season about her having a "gunt" (look it up. Actually, don't.). But Saturdays are an absolute treat with Huey, Giles Peterson and Craig Charles, particularly Craig, playing a whole list of things I love while I either cook with a glass of wine or sober up from the footy. And I persevere with Cerys purely to annoy my children.

Agree with many of the criticisms.
Danny Baker's love affair with the medium is missed
Nicky Campbell's love affair with Nicky Campbell is something I wouldn't miss.
The Chris Sutton double-act with A. Bruce-Ball is getting tiresome. Robbie Savage is simply on too much.
The guy who does the afternoon slot has lost me, but I realise they are after a different demographic (but just how many interviews can you have with Rap practitioners?) He is also a serial name-dropper.
I do think there's a bit of an agenda (over) promoting women's sports but I can live with this. I am a bit fed up with one or two of the female presenters banging on about their kids. 'Radio Bloke' has morphed into Radio For Goodness Sake Don't Upset any Women. Things change and not everyone will like it.

Terrible look at me radio presenter. I am very much in the listen to radio 5 as dont know where else to go after listening since day 1 however want something new. Also cannot stand anything that has adverts. I feel 5 live now tries to cover all possible groups of people but in doing so doesn't really hit any as its spread too thin

To be honest, you can't really use Twitter as a barometer for any rational consensus on either side. People with passive views don't tend to feel the need to comment on social media, just those with very defined views. A passive view doesn't make an interesting read.
I was a huge fan of their Radio X show. It was hilarious at points but also was brilliant on addressing mental health issues as well as laughing at the concept of shame (John Robins has basically hinted at past and current drink and mental health issues throughout). Some people felt very strongly about the show and the help it gave them (genuinely. I know it sounds far too over the top), so it doesn't surprise me to see the VERY opinionated defenders of it get riled by the VERY opinionated detractors.
Someone did a very funny bit where they calculated the actual value of someone's licence fee going on the show (when people complain about their money being spent on it) It was something like £0.0004
If I got upset about EVERY piece of BBC content which wasn't PERFECT for me then I'd go mad. Again, we only consume a minor % of it when you think about it. One programme would NEVER make me reference the price I pay for my licence fee

I agree, and your post is well reasoned. Twitter is indeed a poor barometer as you say but it can be interesting nonetheless. The problem I had with some of the defenders of the show was that they seemed like followers, not football followers, but there was an almost religious fervour in the replies.

That is £0.0004 too much in my opinion.
I spent years addicted to 5live and Talksport, partly due to a love of sport.
In the last year I almost entirely weaned myself off of TS (which every 15 minutes contains 6 minutes of ad’s, road traffic news and zzzzzz cricket updates ..... what a waste of a life). That’s other than the excellent Hawksby & Jacobs, Danny Kelly & Simon Jordan ... I listen to them once or twice a week.
5live - I still like the Monday Night Football Club looking back on the weekend’s games and controversies, and Nicky Campbell (up to 10am) is a great presenter imho.
But I’ve got back into music on the radio - Absolute 80’s in the afternoons and Greatest Hits at any time often play track after track of brilliant music the BBC is too snobbish to air anymore.

I like in the late afternoon/evening, but can't listen to it during the morning/day mid week when it is basically the BBC version of ITV or Mid-Morning Matters.
I tried it a few weeks ago, but they had a phone in regarding whether you should allow a dog to lick your face. YES SERIOUSLY.
Radio 4 isn't much better during the day with it's achingly worthy plays and drama.
I can't stand drama anyway. It's normalised lying and otherwise unemployed show offs reading out some else's words.
However, for me:
1) Today programme utterly essential. Has been waking me up for years.
2) Radio 5 on Saturday/Sundays afternoons, 606 etc.. Sorry it's become part of life and I stay tuned in on Sunday nights, when the station gets "serious".

I can barely listen to 5 Live now, outside of live football commentaries on a Saturday or Sunday.
I used to be a very regular listener in the days of Eddie Mair, Peter Allen, Simon Mayo, Shelagh Fogarty, Fee Glover and so on. But now the presenting style is so dumbed down, the bias or personal agendas of the presenters so obvious and the quality of the output so tabloid I can barely bring myself to listen. It's like seeing an old and much-loved friend suffer from a terminal illness.
I used to quite like Rachel Burden on breakfast but the way she is so deferential to the unsufferably smug and patronising Nicky Cambell makes it a very uncomfortable listen. Is there is a person in the world who loves Nicky Campbell more than Nicky Campbell? In fact, he used to be very good too but over the past few years has become a parody of himself. His massively inflated sense of his own self-importance and just how very pleased he is with himself obscures every story or interview he broadcasts.
I think the move to Salford irreparably damaged 5 Live. Maybe the better quality production / editorial staff declined to move with the station? It certainly sounds like a 6th Form radio station now, with very little expert editorial control brought to bear on the output. Whatever the reason, the station and it's output really is piss-poor these days. I am a radio junkie but it's mostly Radio 4 for me now.

I think I prefer listening to the radio than watching the telly.
I try and catch the late shipping forcast if I'm home from work in time, that and "Sailing By" are two of my favourite things in life.

Don't know if you've heard the new-ish Sunday lunchtime football show hosted by... yoof? If the kids were having their blinkered, banter-filled conversation on your commute, you'd be reaching for your earphones.
Anyway, there was an amazing handover from the yoof to the old guard football commentators last week, with a patronizing put-down of Greg Rusedski for good measure.

Ouch! Deserved the humiliating pause. And totally agree about those annoying kids, perfect simile too. I don’t listen to that slot anymore, bunch of bellends. Won’t be long before I’m over to Radio 4 and Talkshite because as so many others have pointed out, the standard of presenters has plummeted - now more like DJ Outrage & the Sonic Boo Boys
