The myth that Gus or Tony thought Murray wasn't championship quality is total rubbish. We offered him a contract and he turned us down. Gus decided that he didn't think Murray was worth the wage increase + signing on fee that he was demanding and went after CMS instead all the while claiming he would build the team around him (CMS). After the opening weeks of the 11/12 season he changed tactics as we were leaking goals (Leeds @ Home springs to mind) when playing two up top so he changed the formation to the 4-3-3 with Barnes wide left meaning CMS was usually totally isolated. He failed to deliver this promise to CMS and we got stuck with a player who was totally unsuited to the lone striker system Gus decided to play. It's almost been four years since Murray left and in that time we've seen both Barnes and Ulloa leave (who are both better players IMO) so people REALLY need to get over it.

As far as I know a player isn't given a signing on fee if they're already an employee , some may end up with a loyalty bonus but this is paid out if they meet the agreed criteria afterwards and not before. Murray knew that even if we met his wage demands we wouldn't match the £100k signing on fee Palace were offering.

Hardly, Hyypia employed tactics that were ridiculous - that was purely down to him. Hughton (and Jones) moved us from second from bottom, to bottom six, which whilst not great, is better and with the same players. This has been achieved by making the players defend properly for starters, something Hyypia was apparently incapable of.

Next season will be the time to judge Hughton.

??? Not really, Hyypia had to use JFC and Gardner, and the players made errors that cost us a lot of points. He tried to make us play with wing backs like the top Championship teams do. Nothing wrong with that philosophy and he may have turned his bad luck into good luck.

The fact is we have been poor all season and it is a blessing that there are a few teams who have done worse than us.

He can sulk as much as he wants if he scores you 30 plus goals and takes you to the top flight. Bloody hell, he gets paid to score goals not smile at people

True but he only scored five goals for PalARSE in the 11/12 season (less than CMS) and football is a game where nine times out of ten you get out of it what you put in. It's not surprising he scored more goals for us when he was playing for a contract and thus trying harder.

Yes we have been poor thatcan't be denied, but Hyypia made us try to play both wing backs pushed up at the same time, with the idea the defensive midfielders slotting in, which simply could not work, when it leaves JFC (or Crofts at Brentford) in a foot race with a fast winger. As for other top championship teams playing that way, I think that is highly debateable, having seen every team this season, not one has left themselves as exposed as we did under Hyypia.

Regarding having to play Gardner and JFC, I disagree, he preferred these players over Holla and Ince is more accurate.

I seem to remember that Ince was dropped after he jumped out of the way of the ball, when in a wall defending a free kick and we conceded. Holla isn't being used that much at the moment. Our improvement has probably been more down to Kayal and a couple of Calde hero moments than anything else.

He was carrying and playing with a hernia injury the previous season and getting booed for supposed lack of effort (Leeds) by our own fans even though he was injured, but don't let that get in the way of the NSC myth that he only played for one season when he was playing for a contract. He looked a quality player in a piss poor team from the moment he arrived.

Holla was used initially though, when we moved out of the bottom 3. In terms of Ince and the free-kick, surely (though apparently not - re Hyypia), anyone could have seen that his overall play was better than JFC and Gardner.......

In terms of Calderon, Hughton is the one who has reinvented him in midfield, I'm really not sure Hyypia would have ever done that.

Is correct, always had an excellent touch. His languid style went against him and a time when we needed maximum effort.

The apologists will tell you that we couldn't match what Burnley were offering and that they were in a much better position than us at the time. This totally ignores the fact that we didn't offer him a decent wage rise and contract extension a season before his contract was up. Arrogance or cluelessness or a combination of both. Anyone with a brain could see what a committed and skilful never say die player he was, and he was very young. we made a massive gaff letting Murray go, we then repeated it with Barnes and are fed the line by the club and the club apologists on here that 750k was a great deal for a player out of contract at the end of the season.....who we didn't bother to replace.

If you were a Barnes hater, please save yourself the time wasted in responding to this post

Barnes was in the same position as Ince is now with a contract running out in 14 months time. Ince knows Premier League clubs are interested in him so does he sign an extension like Elliot Bennett did or refuse to sign and force Albion's hand in January ?

There are many things that we will never know. The team has been blowing hot and cold, and we have lacked quality under both managers. It's not about comparing the managers anyway, the squad overall has been average at best. I think that even if Hughton was with us at the start of the season he would have still had the problems that Hyypia had.

Some club, can't remember who, offered Watford around 10 million for Troy Deeney pre season, he chose to stay as the club didn't need to sell him. We never inspire that loyalty in players do we?

Edit

It was Leicester
