I saw a program on the gambling industry in Las Vegas - bit of an eye opener, some of the tricks the casinos use like not having clocks and making booze freely available to punters I knew but some of the other tricks of the trade were new to me. And the high tech methods used, like face recognition software, to ensure successful gamblers are virtually banned from any casino on the Strip. Seems they are only too happy to take your money but are really not too happy to let you win it back. As a very infrequent social gambler what annoyed me about LV when I went there was the fact that the roulette wheel has a 0 and a 00 which is not the case in the UK - just another way in which the odds are stacked against the punter. The industry definitely needs more regulation and safeguards put in place - but I can't see it happening in the near future
On the other side, I admirer the clever folk who can singularly and successfully Card Count in Black Jack.
Although seemingly, they get banned from every casino in no time at all.

I worked in a casino for a few years some 15 years ago. One quiet Saturday a guy came in and had a particularly hot streak on roulette and within an hour or 2 he cashed out for just short of 100k, he insisted on being paid in cash, he was told to come back on Monday to collect it. The guy left and then returned later that evening. Over the course of the weekend he kept returning back and getting credit against the 100k he had previously won. When he finally left after having lost the 100k he had previously won his reward was to be told that he was barred from the casino.

My friend got me to open several betting accounts for him. Won thousands and was swiftly banned from each of them.
I had a gambling problem and lost thousands. I wasn’t banned.

No clocks, no natural light, oxygen pumped in, free drinks.......did a day trip from LV that required catching a bus at 6am. Wandered through the casino to the bus meeting point about 5.45am and it was busy......wouldn’t have otherwise known what time of day it was.

I don’t know, I’ve only been to casino’s about three times in my life (as as social with mates or colleagues) and never spent £1.

The OP seems to have a very simplistic view on life. It stands to reason that the companies involved in the industry should take some responsibility – they might not be actually putting the money down, but they are facilitating it and get people hooked with clever marketing. That's why they make so much money – make it look glamorous and keep the punters coming back.
A bit like supermarkets who FLOOD the shelves with unhealthy and fattening food in the lead up to Christmas and Easter and then once they're over, they restock the same shelves with products to help people lose weight! Human, nature, power of advertising, weakness, call it what you like, but these companies know exactly what they are doing. It's all a game, with only those in the industry being the only winners.

I spent three days in Vegas in early May, staying in a hotel on the strip. What was most amazing was how every shop turned into a casino - even a Walgreens! You walked to the back of the store and boom, casino. It was bonkers beyond description. As a reformed gambler, I had no problems at all in ignoring the temptation and instead getting pleasantly drunk in the bars and watching all the sports on the huge bank of screens on one wall. It was a paradise of sporting entertainment and the serving ladies very quickly left my friend and I alone, knowing we weren't going to be splurging.
To echo what others have said, the psychology of the place is amazing. Constant music from the gaming machines, no sense of time or reality, oxygen constantly being pumped in and loads of winning jingles being played all the time from the various one arm bandits around. So easy to get trapped, but of my group of 4, only one of us pumped $10 in a machine and walked away with a pay out slip of $0.79, which she kept for the memory. We then had to stop her pumping in another $10, because that's how the problems begin!
Final thought on the casinos in Vegas, what few people spot is the CCTV cameras overhead. I pointed them out to my group as we walked in and they couldn't believe it, every inch of the ceiling was covered by them. There is nothing they're not seeing the whole time you are there.
