You can get a 1 day travel card for about £15 rather than buying ticket for direct trains.

Mine have also arrived - bit concerned now about the possibility of another Northern Train strike on that Saturday meaning I won't be able to get home. May have to make a weekend of it, which won't be too bad a thing given Newcastle's pubs.....
If there is a strike, you could catch the 685 bus from Eldon Square bus station to Carlisle if you needed to get home!
Good call - but thinking about it now - the strike is a good enough reason for the domestic management to allow a weekend in the pubs and eating chips! So, maybe I won't tell her there's a bus.
