Me too. The softener idea was to combat limescale issues in the central heating and washing machine. The water here is very hard.

I would get an estimate to get a new water main.
A specialist company will do this using a machine called a mole. I've seen homes have this done when there has been a leak underground on the incoming water supply.

Best to Google Water main replacement or ask advice from your water supplier.

Thanks v much. I bet that will be expensive - probably more than £50, I reckon. I'll get a quote.

Not sure of price but I'm sure it's more than £50, but it's worth getting rid of the lead pipe and you can have a softener fitted.

me too.4 figures, I would think.

It wouldn't surprise me if the main feed from the big pipe in the road to my property is also lead.... I'll talk to Anglian water.

Noticed a plumber arrive at flat below ours this morning. Popped down and the guy underneath us was having problems with his water so he turned the main stopcock off, for some reason this switched the cold water off in our kitchen too. The guy sorted it in about 30 seconds.
Thanks for all the advice folks, saved us a few sheckles.
