I'm really pleased with my Barns Green watch time of 1:27:13. Don't know where that came from!

Great to meet up with big nuts who made it to the start in the end, and gets extra kudos for turning it in to a brick session by cycling to the course and still putting in a handy time!

Likewise. Not sure if the 20 mile bike ride helped or hindered. I was certainly warmed up for the start, which was good news as I got there at 09:38. Just enough time to get changed, down some water, eat a banana and take care of toilet business.

Cycling into Barns Green I spotted Scott Overall who is a c2.10 marathon runner and I’m pretty sure he’s competed in the olympics. I’ll check later. Anyway he ran the 10k in 31 minutes, which doesn’t seem hugely impressive based on his track record.

My watch had me in at 1:29:18 which I’m truly delighted with. Almost 3 minutes quicker than last year and made all the sweeter ivo the tricky arrival and trip home (I got the train by the way).

Sets me up nicely for bright 10 but a rest very much required. A final word on Barns Green, superb again and it could well be my favourite race of the year.

Good luck today’s competitors. I’ll be getting the league table updated once i’ve had the race report from Mr Banana who flew to a pb yesterday at Hove Park.

Thanks for noticing! Did you run this weekend? Satdi was hard work. Had a lot of whiskey, a beer and half a fag on Friday. Shot off fast and just tried to ignore my pathetic lack of resilience and not let up. No idea how GG won it in that obscene time.

Tremendously well played to everyone who ran this weekend :)

Well done all three Barns Greeners - did you get an elusive gold medal? (First 100?) I managed a silver last time I did it.

My favourite run too - definitely back next year.

Final taper smooth 8 miles along sea front despite a stinky cold. Quick hello to Guinness Boy on the way. Final countdown for Budapest now - getting super excited.

The only disappointment for me was the silver medal. They’ve changed it from top 100 to 50. Bloody annoying as I was 65th. I was about 103rd last year so just missed out there too.

Gold medal?! I'd have signed up if I knew!

To be clear, what are the events you're 100% in for in 2019 big nuts? Let's get the 2019 year of competition in the diary early on! Barns Green is in for sure, presumably Worthing Half as well, once again. Maybe try and pencil in 1 parkrun per month but we don't need to be specific about which dates each month, that can be determined by your availability as we go along.

I'm going to dedicate the rest of this year to running a fast parkrun. I enjoyed the Tilgate course, the Hove Park comparison is very apt. I came 8th in 19:37, beating my new friend (foe?!) into 9th place by turning up the speed in the final KM and a half. I misjudged the location of the finish line which meant I left it too late to sprint to take back 7th which I let go without about a quater of a KM left. My watch measured short and I didn't know the finish line was so close, I thought it was a good 100 yards further away and there would be a chance to catch him. There wasn't, fair play to him and a rare lost place in the final half KM for me.

I went out this evening for a 10k, deliberately hilly including a nice leg stretcher up Snakey Hill. :albion2:

It is a lovely, friendly event, I suspect I'll run it again sometime too.

I only noticed the criteria for a gold medal after I'd gotten home with one in my hand! Turns out I finished 45th, 43rd male I believe.

I got one before for finishing 88th when it was first 100 across the line, but agree that the new 50 men / 50 women is more equitable (though why not 100 each?). Bet it's a nightmare for the volunteers handing them out though!

That’s bloody positive discrimination. Women have got two arms and two legs, granted their brain is slightly more unhinged than ours but it’s still unfair!

Fair enough, I’ll have to come 50th or above next year whilst in the process beating Ninja Elephant - trouble is he’s got youth on his side, he’s recovery will still be good whereas I’m cramping up on the sofa tonight.

I take it none of the young whipersnappers were there this week? They are always his nemesis. I saw him running through the Buckingham Park in SBS on Friday, so the last-minute training obviously paid off...

Well done on your PB, Mr B.

I will do the Ironman in Tenby, without any question or shadow of doubt. But it won't be next year. I need to work on my swimming and my intention is to do so, starting before the end of this year. I believe I have the other two elements covered, although I am going to need to work on my cycling distances. I've done a 100 mile cycle previously and I needed to have a nice nap for about a week afterwards! I'd only had my bike for 2 months, admittedly, and I'm considerably more experienced now than I was then - but there's a lot of work to get done.

Also, there's the little matter of the price tag! I can't currently afford to do such a thing. I should be able to do so but I'm afraid not. If only I'd found running 10 years ago, how different my life would be today! But let's deal with reality as it is rather than how I wish it were.

My chip time for Ealling was 1:24:40 so a massive PB for me by 4 minutes. My friends also got a sub 1:20:00 so it was a good day all around.

Despite the time I've felt wiped out all week and my thighs had no energy in them thought about stopping early at various points but very happy with the results. Going to see my GP today though as I have zero energy at the moment :/ and it's very unlike me...maybe I'm just burn out.

Great time with dodgy thighs. Low energy could be overtraining but there has been a bug going around that comes and goes over 2-3 weeks.

Gutted for you.

I was told that I misunderstood Boston when I posted the text below in a running group:

"I'm not particularly fussed about running the majors, but I think this kind of thing is bullshit.

They know that LOADS of people want to run them, but they ALSO know that those same people have no chance of doing it, because of the rules they put in place. Why not limit the number of times runners can take part? Then everyone who wants to can give it a crack.

At the end of the day, running is meant to be a bit of fun that is accessible to all. Putting up these barriers to entry is just a shitty thing to do for 'normal' runners."

I stand by it - I can't stand the elitism about running sometimes [emoji35][emoji35]

I agree with you in terms of how this year's applications ended up with thousands of qualifiers not making the cut. However, I don't have a problem with the process itself. There's so many great races around the World which you can just pay your entry fee fee and you're in, so it's fine that a few of them have strict qualification rules. I actually like the fact I've got a target to aim for, as it makes me train harder and if I succeed I'll get something out of it. I actually think the lottery system is worse, when someone can get drawn out the first time they enter ahead of someone who might have applied 4 or 5 times.

I've just paid for my entry for the Phoenix Marathon on 9th February. An example of a really good race without any entry requirements. I have to say I'm really looking forward to it, some of the scenery near the start looks spectacular when you go down from the hills into the city. I'm doing a half marathon in Toronto in 3 weeks, then I'll be going straight into training again. It's going to be a tough few months!

Sat out by me. Finding the going hard actually doing some real running. Anterior tibialis nearly fixed but not risking injury.

Isn’t that just like 6k @ park run pace?

No it's like 3,600m at 5k pace and 2,400m at 10k time with 10 minutes total rest during the distance.

Just because I'm curious about how these sessions work how do they split people according to 5k/10k times?

Do they have a group of people at 6m/mi 5k and 6.20m/mi 10k times run together or do people just settle on their own target times?
