What was the EFL supposed to do? You'd be better off blaming the PL and subsequent inflation in wages which has meant that clubs have players in League 2 on £4k+ a week.

On a slightly more positive note
The nearest club to me, Rushden and Diamonds, worked their way up through the football pyramid backed by the money of Max Griggs, eventually reaching League 1.
He built a ground, training and youth facilities
Eventually his family and his health forced him to sell and then began the inexorable decline. After a couple of dodgy owners, the club was expelled from the Conference in 2011 and entered administration.
The ground Nene Park was demolished and the club was gone.
However, a few hundred diehards built the the club back up from nothing, initially with a youth team competing in the Northants Youth League in 2012.
After ground sharing with Wellingborough Town with home gates of over 500, seven years later they’re back to Level 7, Southern League Central, owned by the fans and playing back in Rushden with youth teams at all levels.
So my point is, it’s not all over for Bury, as it wasn’t for the Albion.
But ownership remains a big problem in football.
Could the same thing happen again at our club, sometime in the future?

Have a fit and proper person test that is fit for purpose?
Monitor club accounts quarterly with real threats if not provided?
Initiate rules that mean fans groups have first grabs at takeovers?
Look at making clubs community assets like pubs so chancers like Day Dale and Archer can’t just asset strip?

Real threats? Of what? That is exactly what happened here. Hangover from last season, Bury couldn't provide the evidence of funding and ability to get through the next 2 seasons. The EFL threatened them with expulsion from the league, and again, and again.... and then did it?
How many fan groups would have the funding to save Bury or Bolton? Bury need £8M don't they?

It would not have been allowed to get to this point if quarterly checks had been made on the accounts, with threats of overspending/ losses would leading to fan group ownership.
Criminals would not be interested in buying clubs with these rules.
But the EFL is on the money train with the FA Sky and the Premier League
The problem is - almost every EFL club is gambling with their future to try and get promoted to the next level. We did it our last couple of seasons in the Championship and made significant losses in search of promotion to the Premier League. We'd have been proper screwed if for whatever reason, Tony Bloom decided he could not carry on.
You say a fan group take over but then what? The debts are still there, the outgoing payments will still be there so where does the funding come from?
With there history terrible outcome. Little I have read 100% down to bad management. Even heard local MP saying loans at 130% taken out including on parking spaces. Have never felt comfortable with wages etc in Premier but with 100 plus million people watching a game you can understand. However money paid out in lower leagues by chasing the dream is in proportion more of a problem. Have never understood how clubs including many in National league with gates of 1/3000 can justify full time players. Whatever clubs history pruning is needed. how on earth do they expect to survive with 3/4 clubs in 10 mile radius.

Currently Sky money means that Championship clubs are risking all to make the promised land
Derby Sheffield Wednesday and Villa have all sold their grounds and leased back to avoid FFP and EFL rules. This was not possible but the EFL changed their rules to allow it
The EFL are not fit for purpose
What do you propose the EFL do if a club breaks whatever rules you want to put in place? The only thing they can really do is deduct points or kick people out the league. Or are you suggesting the government gives them powers to be able to take over clubs and run them if deemed to be run correctly? Sounds like a legal nightmare and giving the people not fit for purpose even more power.
There is a lot of romantic views around all this but really these are clubs that have been badly run for a very long time and are unsustainable. Genuine question - but were Bury fans protesting about this last season when things were going well and they bought their way to promotion?
As I mentioned the other day, they need to cap wages and amounts you are allowed to pay on a single transfer.
