I've been thinking a lot about how our dear old Glenn will go on next season - my memory from when he was playing in the Premier League previously was that he scored frequently against some big teams. I thought I'd have a look at his stats for the three seasons he played in the Premier League.

I always think that strike rate (minutes per goal) is a fair way to compare strikers as just looking at goals scored doesn't show the full picture.

Looking at these initial stats we can see that he has consistently improved his strike rate over each of the three seasons.

Crystal Palace 2013-14
Starts 3 - Sub Appearances 11 - Minutes Played 394 - Goals 1 - Mins / Goal 394

Crystal Palace 2014-15
Starts 9 - Sub Appearances 8 - Minutes Played 868 - Goals 7 - Mins / Goal 265

Bournemouth 2015-16
Starts 8 - Sub Appearances 3 - Minutes Played 795 - Goals 5 - Mins / Goal 186

Average over 3 seasons
Minutes Played 685 - 4.3 goals - Average Mins / Goal 281

The table below shows the top scorers in last years Premier League ranked by strike rate. In the table I have included Glenn Murray from each season and also his average of the three seasons.

1. Michy Batshuyai - 5 goals - 47m/goal
2. Harry Kane - 29 goals - 87m/goal
3. Gabriel Jesus - 7 goals - 93m/goal
4. Olivier Giroud - 12 goals - 99m/goal
5. Sergio Aguero - 20 goals - 120m/goal
6. Romelu Lukaku - 25 goals - 130m/goal
7. Alexis Sanches - 24 goals - 134m/goal
8. Zlatan Ibrahimovich - 17 goals - 143m/goal
9. Diego Costa - 20 goals - 154m/goal
10. Charlie Austin - 6 goals - 156m/goal
11. Fernando Lorente - 15 goals - 164m/goal
12. Josh King - 16 goals - 170m/goal
13. Jay Rodriguez - 5 goals - 176m/goal
14. Islam Slimani - 7 goals - 182m/goal
Genn Murray 15-16 Premier League - 5 goals - 186m/goal
15. Andy Carrol - 7 goals - 188m/goal
16. Peter Crouch - 7 goals - 190m/goal
17. Sam Vokes - 10 goals - 205m/goal
18. Divok Origi - 7 goals - 208m/goal
19. Christian Benteke - 15 goals - 209m/goal
20. Jamie Vardy - 13 goals - 216m/goal
21. Jermaine Defoe - 15 goals - 221m/goal
22. Callum Wilson - 6 goals - 227m/goal
23. Benik Afobe - 6 goals 241m/goal
24. Andre Gray - 9 goals - 252m/goal
Glenn Murray 14-15 Premier League - 7 goals - 265m/goal
Genn Murray Premier League average - 4.3 goals - 281m/goal

25. Troy Deeney - 10 goals - 294m/goal
26. Ashley Barnes - 6 goals - 296m/goal
27. Wayne Rooney - 5 goals 308m/goal
28. Alvaro Negredo - 9 goals - 319m/goal
29. Marcus Rashford - 5 goals - 340m/goal
30. Solomon Rondon - 8 goals - 362m/goal
Genn Murray 13-14 Premier League - 1 goal - 394m/goal

So what does this tell us? Well that Glenny Murray is better than Wayne Rooney (who isn't as good as Ashley Barnes) obviously! Jokes aside I think it shows that Glenn should be more than capable of holding his own this coming season. I'm not sure we'll see more than around 60m per game from Glenn as it'll be hard work. If he can get anywhere near his stats from 2014-15 we should be looking at a return of around 12-13 goals next year.

Looking at seasons past, and this is pure speculation, it seems that we'll need at least 40 goals to beat relegation. That leaves AT LEAST 27 goals to share around the rest of the team.

Knockaert: 10
Hemed: 5
March: 5
Baldock: 2
Murphy: 2
Stephens: 1
Dunk: 1
Duffy: 1

Total: 27!

That may do it? But think about how much easier if we could add another 10-15 goal a season striker!

Hope you enjoyed the stats, and hope I haven't offended any of the more sensitive posters on here by "speculating"!

:albion2:

I love my stats but one thing we have not taken in to consideration that time has passed and Glenn is on wrong side 30 so will he have lost another yard?

I will take 10 outfield goals from him, anymore would be a bonus.

Do you know how many of the goals were Pens???

That one was, against Swansea away. And he won the pen as well.

I loved Glenn at the Palace but pace is needed in this league, I wish him well.

I think he's going to have a good year for us this year. He's settled here, and he's had full pre-season under his belt. I can see him reaching double figures if he plays as well as we know he can, injuries permitting.

Probably ought to be another thread, but as it's here:-

This seasons league goals scorers

A Striker: 8
Hemed: 7 (3 from the spot)
Murray: 7
Baldock: 3
Brown: 3
Groß: 6
Knockaert: 4
March: 2
Murphy: 1
Dunk: 3
Duffy: 2
Suttner: 1

Wow 47 goals, no padding, and I don't think I've missed any of the likely goalscorers.

Murray is going to be a little older, a little slower, a little more prone to niggles trying to compete at the highest level. Will he play 38 games + cups next season? Unlikely I'd say.

Even if his minutes/goals count stacks up well, brilliant as that is for when he's on the pitch, if there's no other forward of sufficient quality (be it with or instead of GM) there will be problems.

We're into August now. It's a concern. I'm still certain something will happen on that front though...won't it...

59.

It ain't how many goals you score or concede, it's which goals you score and concede.

For me jury is still out on which way that will go.

I'm enjoying some of the realistic goal targets for our forward players being set at 2 and 3. And I thought that I didn't rate them very highly...

I'm predicting at least one comedy own goal by Dunky unfortunately - love the lad but he's capable of moments of calamitous madness (who isn't?)

I agree, if your in the thick of the action and let's face it he will be, there is every chance of it!
MInd you I reckon he will end the season with a positive amount of goals.........just!

25 goals from the strikers is an excellent return, it even allows a little room to pleasantly surprised.
That has to be preferable to setting totally unobtainable targets from players that have only scored a handful of goals throughout their entire career.
