Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben Barclay is joining League Two Notts County on loan until the end of the season, with his under-23 colleague Ben Hall returning from his loan at Meadow Lane.

It’s Manchester-born Barclay’s first loan move away from Albion, having joined the club from Manchester City in 2013.

Albion boss Chris Hughton said, “This is a good move for Ben, and a great opportunity for him to gain his first taste of regular senior football with Notts County.

“He has been in and around the first-team environment during pre-season and the first half of the season, and the chance to go and play first-team football will be ideal for his development.”

The 22-year-old was part of Albion’s 25-man Premier League squad during the first half of the season, and made his first-team debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup second round tie at the Amex.

He also featured in all three Checkatrade Trophy ties, as Simon Rusk’s side narrowly missed out on advancing through to the knock-out stages of the competition.

Barclay was part of the under-23 side who won promotion to Division One of the Premier League 2 last season, and has been a regular in the side this term.

Hall, who joined Notts County last January and returned to Meadow Lane in the summer, hasn’t featured this season due to injury. He returns to Albion to continue his rehabilitation work.

Ben Barclay to Plymouth Argyle on trial.

Plymouth Argyle have handed a trial to Ben Barclay, the 22-year-old centre back recently released by Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

As reported by their official website, the defender has been given a chance to prove his worth in the south-west after his release by Graham Potter’s side. He made just one appearance for the Seagulls, in the EFL Cup, as well as three outings for their Under 21 side in the EFL trophy.

A loan move to Notts County followed where he appeared 13 times but was unable to prevent them from slipping out of the Football League. He returned to Brighton having missed the final two matches of the season following a suspension for a red card.

Six years at the Albion - as we've released him, presumably we won't get anything for him if Plymouth do take him? So - no profit for the academy there?

Correct.

The only U-23 who left at the end of last season who we will (potentially) get money for is Will Collar.

It would be easy to lose faith in the academy with every player who leaves, but we should remember that we only need one player to come through and become a first team regular and that would offset all the investment, and then some. Just look at Southampton, they are the blueprint we are following. Right down to hiring Dan Ashworth.

In 2010, Saints appointed the FA’s former Technical Director Les Reed as Head of Football Development and Support.

Now we just need to produce our own Alan Shearer or Gareth Bale.

True. But they did manage to sell him to Coventry for a million back in 2007.

It will be nice when we can ship out our academy duds for a profit.

Oh dear. Let's hope the Academy makes a better job of paying its way with some other buy-to-sell-on youngsters. Or we will just have to use it to provide the players for the future first team.................................

Ales Mateju - £2 million or so profit if the agreed deal with Bescia happens.
