Derby are interested in him if you believe the gossip section of the BBC Sport pages.

If Wayne Rooney manages to keep Derby County in the Championship he will look to sign Brighton and Republic of Ireland centre-back Shane Duffy, 29, who has spent the season on loan at Celtic. (Football Insider)

Even if Derby stay up - Rooney could (and probably should) still be sacked.

It is worth noting how far Duffy's star has fallen that Forest aren't being mentioned as a destination. With Egan, O'Sea, Collins, Clark and now Omobamidele in front of him, it is unlikely Duffy will make the Irish squad again, and even if he does he won't be seen on the pitch.

I wouldn't trust Wayne Rooney with Marcus Rashford's School Dinner Money, never mind several million quid.

Shane would be a good signing for Forest if he was at the same fitness levels he was a few years ago but I don't think he is - Brighton will want too much money for Duffy and he just isn't worth what Brighton currently value him at unless he works on his fitness again

A summer to get in shape and sober up @ a serious Championship side would be a good move. I wonder if he has the appetite for it any more, he must have a few bob in the bank to keep him in guinness for at least a few decades.

He seems to have lost his way massively, I guess we are about to find out how much football really means to Shane.

There's a narrative developing that Shane lost his way because he's been in the pubs and in the Casinos?

Really?

They've all been closed for nearly all the time he's been at Celtic. They were open when he was with us and he was in them, (but he played brilliantly).

I think the truth is closer to, Celtic was just the wrong environment for him at the wrong time. His form deserted and he couldn't recapture the confidence.

He will come back in the summer and there won't be any clubs willing to take on his huge contract. We'll look to loan him out with us paying probably 80 to 90% of his salary.

There's an outside chance he can't find a suitable loan club, he stays with us and we'll see him again in the stripes in a few cup games or possibly up front in the PL for the last 5 minutes of games where we need an equaliser

I think it sometimes can be the wrong thing to do to join your boyhood club, it's not just he supported Cetlic, he absolutely adored and idolised them. This season will have left him bereft and broken hearted. I am sure a class act like Shane can turn it round in the right environment.

He's a tough tackling, throw himself at everything, 'repel all boarders' defender .... great in the Hughton team that played for survival from minute 1.

I don't know where that sort of player would go ... arguably a Fulham could have used him, but I'm not sure why Celtic wanted him (surely not a few set piece headers). If Derby are ambitious I'd struggle to understand why they would want him either, although keeping Rooney might suggest they aren't!

I could see him back here with the odd cameo performance, or maybe a Champ club with a leaky defence in second half of season

While I admire his defend-at-all-cost attitude, I don't rate Duffy as a Premier League player. I'm also not impressed with how he seems to behave off the pitch. Get rid.

With the plethora of centre backs now at the club, and with us adopting a style of football that really doesn't suit him, l really do think that Shane's wearing an Albion shirt may well be over.

No place for him at the back now, even off the bench, and l really can't imagine that someone like Graham Potter will simply throw a big lump on up front in the last few minutes to try and bludgeon us a goal.

If it was Chris Hughton then yes absolutely, but those days are long gone now. A great asset in the right set up, but that isn't our way anymore.

Harsh in the extreme. I readily acknowledge that his days at the Albion are almost certainly over, but he did a great job for us in our first couple of seasons under Chris Hughton in the Premier League, he and Dunky were a formidable partnership at the back. Just saying get rid doesn't show any respect at all.

I’m sure you were saying this when Duffy was our player of the season.. right? Nah. Course you weren’t.

Shane made the right move at the wrong time. To a dinosaur manager with a deprecating Celtic team trying to play a system that doesn’t suit him.

If he were to go to a Burnley, a Brom, Newcastle, Palace he would be a very solid acquisition for them. He’s not a ball playing defender. But that doesn’t mean he’s a poor one.

He was brilliant for us and formed such a formidable partnership with Dunk. But his thud-and-blunder technique just doesn't fit in with Potters philosophy, he wouldn't get a look-in here now. Best for all parties if we can ideally sell him on, or send him out on loan again to keep his sizable wedge off our wagebill.

I could easily see him ending up at any one of the 3 clubs going down this season, as they'll have the benefit of the parachute payments to bolster their squads. The strip clubs in Sheffield are decent, he'll feel right at home somewhere like that.

True but I didn't JUST say get rid did I? I said I admire his defend-at-all-costs attitude, that's a sign of respect. I also respect the fact he HAS played in the Premier League and had captained his country. I just don't think he anywhere near the standard of Dunk, Webster, White or Veltman.

I didn't say it when he was Player of the Season, no, nor did I vote for him. B that was three seasons ago. His form has dropped in that time, just as much our style of play has changed. He may well be a sold acquisition for Burnley, West Brom or Newcastle but aren't we supposed to be aiming just a tiny bit higher than a relagated team, our arch rivals, Newcastle un-United and the divisions's smash-and-grab side?

Burnley will likely sign Nathan Collins from Stoke for a fee expected to be about £15million. Collins has already replaced Duffy in the Irish squad. Similarly with Newcastle who already have Clark who is ahead of Duffy in the Irish squad. West Brom are a possibility as they will probably be forced to sell O'Shea when they get relegated. Palace depends on who replaces Hodgson.

To be honest - I can't see Duffy playing in the PL again - his star has fallen a long way and even if he was able to rehabilitate his reputation, the Championship is likely the level he will end up at. On top of that I think that Brighton will have no option but to loan him out or pay off the remainder of his contract, because I cannot see anyone paying a fee for him.
