But didn't reach number 1 until 1979.

Which is immaterial otherwise something like The Dark Side of The Moon, would be one of he greatest albums of 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978...................

Anything which is greatest or best of a year rather than being based on sales for that year, must be purely based on the release year

I can remember whacking one off to Debbie Harry when she appeared on Top of the Pops. It used to piss my mother if if we had guests in the lounge.
