It's more to do with the F.A.s concern that too many average foreign players were being brought over on the cheap, at the expense of young British players.
The rules were tightened up after consultation, with a view to stopping Championship and league one teams filling their squads with mediocre non EU players.
Are we sure that's the reason for the work permits issue for lads like Tau? Having a quick look at the championship rules, aren't they handling the "young British players" issue through the home-grown match day squad quota rules? (which, incidentally, look a lot stricter than for the Prem?)

At the time of the consultation, in 2015, a stat being circulated by the FA was a reason for the rule change was that only 58% of football players who were given work visas played any top-flight football in their second season.
Greg Dyke also referenced the lower leagues.

Yes they should - because many people here are far too lazy to get off their arses to do it! At least many of them work hard and are willing to do a job that some people look down upon and think they are too good for! Many of them are desperate for work and if there is a gap here for them to fill, then why not!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the job of fruit picking, just suggesting that those that do the job come from the EU without the need for visas rather than from any other part of the world.
Right, ok - that makes more sense. But that's still not the same thing as what I replied to: if they're not playing, they can't be blocking young British players from playing.

Yup. Confirmed by checking FIFA site. SAf in 49th. No update to the Men's yet.
Would hazard a guess that the Men's rankings won't update until the current African tournament is completed.
