I have a number of Haynes manuals and even with them I struggle

I must have used these for at least 6 cars over the course of time. Used these for cylinder heads, valve springs, pistons, crankshaft, flywheel, brakes, brakepipes, etc.
Clear instructions, but sometimes needed the hire/borrowing of specialist equipment like engine hoist, valve spring compressor, torque wrench, etc.
However.........the practicalities of carrying out a simple instruction like "undo bolt" could be something else! Laying in a contorted position with your face up against an oily sump whilst compensating for lack of a four foot arm to blindly locate the spanner over said nut, and then attempting to turn it a sixth of a turn as that was all the space that there was to rotate the spanner. Then the spanner slipping off and scraping you knuckles for the umpteenth time.
Half a page of Haynes could take over a day. But at least you knew that the job had been done properly and for Nil labour cost.

I started out by using them . . . Still have my first few (Vespa and mk1 Cortina!) Now I've started writing one, although currently stalled!

Ha! Yes, saved me typing that! It often wasn't as easy as the manual suggested. However, yeah, when I started driving back in 1976 I could only afford old bangers and the relevant Haynes manual was an essential purchase. Even a complete klutz like myself managed to do a fair amount of routine repairs and servicing.

That'll be a minute's applause on the 80th minute on Saturday then. How many minutes are still left available?

Apologies for any disrespect, anyone who knew him. RIP John.
