About St Barnabas’ Hospice

St Barnabas’ Hospice is a charity whose aim is to provide high quality specialist palliative care both within the hospice and in the comfort of patients’ homes. Since the doors first opened in 1973, St Barnabas in Durrington, near Worthing, has cared for more than 10,000 patients. The hospice provides a 15-bed in-patient unit, a purpose-built day care centre, a specially trained community palliative care team and a bereavement service for relatives.

As part of its community role, St Barnabas cares for children who have life-limiting conditions and are not expected to reach their nineteenth birthday. These children suffer from a wide variety of conditions, sometimes genetic and often progressively degenerative. In many cases the children need constant care, sometimes for many years, which places an enormous strain on families.

In 1998 St Barnabas started a fund raising appeal to build Chestnut Tree House, a special care facility for children. This groundbreaking initiative – the only children’s hospice in Sussex - has been part funded out of hospice reserves and is planned to open later this year.

Despite the current financial outlook, St Barnabas remains committed to the new facility, which is now almost complete, although there remains a significant shortfall in build and commissioning costs that will have to be met by voluntary donations, as no funds are available from the state
