Scott started_refereeing in Stockport and Cheshire and progressed through the Northern League. He was promoted onto The Football League assistant referees list in 1990 before gaining promotion to the national list of referees in 1994. During the 2001/02 season Scott was appointed to both the_Worthington Cup final and the FA Vase final as 4th official.
