Loved Hislops point that taking the money and commentating is hardly likely to lead to on air criticism of the regime during the game by Neville. Two faced, champagne socialism. Wonder if HT is going to the tournament?

Yes, he was happy to take the piss out of his brother for being the former England manager but didn’t react to Beckham getting his bank balance dirty.

I see the usual right wing commentators gleefully attacking Nevile (and Lineker - what's he done FFS?). As if Nevile is single handedly responsible for persuading every footballer from every qualifying nation to go and play at the world cup against their better judgement.

Unless the likes of the posters above are camped outside the Qatari embassy now, and dialing in their sneers while protesting, rather than bracing themselves to watch the Albion, replete with its (soon to be) world cup attending players this afternoon, then I'm duty bound to bounce the H word (hypocrites) back at them.

Or hypocrite fans paying to watch Brighton at the Ethiad or St James Park. Or flying with British Airways or through Heathrow airport … etc etc

I see that the Welsh government are boycotting, er, the Wales vs Iran game . The main public activist protester, and one who I would be delighted to see @wellquickwoody and @worthingseagull123 stand foursquare alongside, is Peter Tatchell. I am certain that they absolutely share Tatchell's world views and values. Certain.

Really like Neville. I think he’s brilliant but he’s being a tad naive here. He could for example choose to donate any commentary earnings to a human rights charity?

Couldn’t you turn it round on Hislop too perhaps? He’s income is largely based on criticising the establishment/government and others don’t get paid to do so.

Everyone is a hypocrite in one way or another (usually in a fuckload of ways tbh)... just human nature. Most of us have a moral compass but if it makes life significantly more poor and difficult, most if not all of us are going to throw that moral compass in the water.

Gary Neville is probably in a better position than most people to actually not be a hypocrite, but he is anyway. Fair enough, not going to throw him under some bus for it. But what annoys me is his shit excuse that he's going to work for beIN Sports because he wants to "highlight issues". If he'd just tell us the real deal - "I like football and money so its a perfect deal for me" - he'd be seen as a ****, but at least he'd espace being seen as a pathetic liar.

Interesting to listen to about football and came over well about ESL (they should have payed him to promote it )
Of course World Cup should not be taking place their and rightly FA criticised . He is an absolute phoney with his views on this and politics. If he was a man of principle what an opportunity to talk about human rights with the same passion of ESL. How sad reason he wont is money.

Our FA played a pointless friendly against Brazil in Qatar in 2009 to try and get a vote for our failed 2018 World Cup bid ! Our FA are complicit

Who is Neville commentating for? If it’s a British broadcaster then they’ll be paying him, and they would have paid FIFA for the broadcasting rights. Where is he getting paid by Qatar?

I don't imagine he will be able to sit in the Bein studio and rant and rave about the iniquity in Qatar, so I agree he is naive and by taking the money and not giving it away (albeit watch this space - he may well plan to do that) and would therefore be a hypocrite. However, I plan to evaluate him after the world cup, based on what he says and does afterwards as much as during.

And there are of course more Englishmen than just Nevile attending the world cup. I am looking forward to reading about peoples' experiences there. Will some push out the boat and see how far it floats I wonder?
