An Italian friend of ours is going to be in Birmingham for a couple of weeks to improve her English.
I have never been there but I am sure someone on NSC can recommend some things to do /places to visit at the weekends while she is there.

Over to you :)
And thanks in advance.

Improve her English in Birmingham

Good Luck with that one. Don't get me wrong. I love the accent. However, I am not even sure she will understand the English, never mind get better at it

The jewellery quarter (plus there is a pen-knib museum - a bit niche, maybe!)
Winterbourne House and Gardens.
Plenty of parks and open spaces.
Lovely walks just out of town - the Lickey Hills and the Clent Hills (beware of the car park - they lock it (with cars still inside) at a ridiculously early hour!)
The Black Country Museum (excellent local guides, with local accents - great for improving the variety of her English!)
More canals than Venice, with towpaths to walk along.
Rag market and open air market.
Sea life centre.
The Balti Triangle.

Black Country Museum
Marco’s rooftop bar at The Cube

The Balti scene is now minute compared with its heyday.

TBF she speaks excellent English but wants to get to understand "regional accents" so probably a tough starting point. She liked Peaky Blinders :)

She will love the aforementioned Black Country Museum, in that case. An open air museum of life in the midlands at the time of PB. Even has a pub of the era.

Things to do in Birmingham

I always remember Jasper Carrott's reply when asked that very question by Parkinson many moons ago: "We've got a folk club on Thursday nights"

Hove
Sarehole Mill, a hangout of Tolkien’s in his youth, and Moseley Bog nearby where many of the stories were set

Bournville model village

Gas Street Basin is the place for picking up canal trips

Soho house, important in the history of the industrial revolution

The Olde Crown pub, not in a great area but built 1368 and where the Peaky Blinders tours start.

Birmingham University is also very nice to wander round, the clock tower is a copy of the one in Siena.

The Jewellery quarter
