I look after the communal electricity for my flat and am coming to the end of my deal. The existing provider has got rid of it's low standing charge and wants to increase our communal bill from about £30 a year to £155 a year.

It's a separate bill and meter for 3 energy saving lightbulbs that are typically on for about 5minutes per day.

did have a nil standing charge account, then it went to 10p a day, now they want 40p a day.

the comparison sites all seem to have given up.

Anyone recently renewed or switched for something similar?

I reckon you’re a bit stuck unless there is some niche specialist company out there for this kind of thing

I'm afraid that you are paying for the companies that went bust. That is why the standing charge has gone up dramatically I believe.

As it stands I'd be £40 a year better off if the communal lighting was run through my meter (and the other 2 flats would be £50 better off).

File under BALLACHE.

would look at some solar powered solution for a few communal low power lights. at that sort of annual cost probably pay off in a couple years.
