Yet another subscription channel (yes they'll be a free option).

Not sure who subscribes to all these channels, you can spend an absolute fortune on subscription TV.

In this economic climate can see a few of them not being around in the same format or at all, in a few years.

One of the most anticipated dramas of the autumn, The Long Shadow is set to be “the depiction of the desperate five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe”.

The seven-part drama focuses on the lives of the victims who crossed his path and those of the officers at the heart of the police investigation. With the victims, their families and the survivors at the heart of this series, The Long Shadow brings a new perspective to a well-documented story.

Toby Jones plays DCS Dennis Hoban, who initially led the enquiry, with David Morrissey taking the role of DCS George Oldfield, who famously took on the investigation. Lee Ingleby is DCS Jim Hobson, while Katherine Kelly plays Emily Jackson with Daniel Mays as her husband, Sydney Jackson and Shaun Thomas as their son, Neil Jackson.

Jill Halfpenny plays Doreen Hill, with Daisy Waterstone as her daughter, Jacqueline Hill. Jasmine Lee-Jones plays Marcella Claxton, Molly Wright as Donna Deangelo, Liz White as PS Meg Winterburn and Shaun Dooley as DCS Chris Gregg.

The cast also includes Alexa Davies, Chloe Harris, Stephen Tompkinson, Jack Deam, Michael McElhatton, Adam Long, Ruth Madeley, Dorothy Atkinson, Rob James-Collier, Charley Webb, Steven Waddington and Kris Hitchen.

Airs in September.

Loved it.
Both book and dramatisation were brilliant. I never really knew the details of who did what in the Philby/3rd man/4th man saga and this explained everything in a really gripping and shocking way. The book (or audiobook for me) was probably even better as the TV version invented some characters for no good reason.

ITV has unveiled a first-look image from its upcoming Ruth Ellis drama, A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.

Lucy Boynton stars as the infamous murderess, the last woman to be hanged in the UK.

The four-part series tells the hidden story of Ellis and exposes the timeless British obsessions of class, sex and death.

Set in 1955 in the glamorous and intoxicating world of London club-land, Ruth found huge acclaim, aged 28, as the capital’s youngest club manager.

But her success soon unravelled as she became entwined in an abusive relationship with racing driver David Blakely. On trial for his murder, Ruth was condemned to hang by a system which judged her for far more than her crime.

The cast also includes Toby Jones, Laurie Davidson and Mark Stanley, as well as Joe Armstrong, Arthur Darvill, Nigel Havers, Toby Stephens and Juliet Stevenson.

Set in the fictional small Northern town of Chadder Vale, the cast is led by Wunmi Mosaku who plays Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa as she investigates a series of strange and inexplicable crimes that have the townsfolk spinning on an axis.

Riya arrived in the quiet town of Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for something, anything that will make her feel alive again.

Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya, a relative outsider to the Chadder Vale way of life, none of this sits right. As a series of strange happenings and increasingly shocking crimes start unfolding within the town, the residents resort to short-sighted theories and blame outside influences such as the fracking site and its manager Jim Bracknell (David Threlfall). As things become stranger, Riya fights hard to convince the villagers that all is not as it seems. But what are they so afraid of?

Further casting includes Jo Hartley as Chief Constable Linda Markel, Sean Gilder as Tony Corrigan, Debbie Rush as forensic analyst Terry Jackson, Daniel Ryan as Derek Jackson, Barry Sloane as Eddie Wells, Natalie Gavin as Joanne Wells, Nico Mirallegro as Kane Jackson, Hubert Hanowicz as Jakub Makowski, Jack James Ryan as John Trowbridge, Matilda Freeman as Lilly Wells, Shervin Alenabi as Mehmet Shah, Ella Bruccoleri as Ali Day and Arian Nik as Nish Chowdry – all of whom form the close-knit community that is sent spinning on its axis following a series of strange and unnatural crimes, in the small Northern village of Chadder Vale.
