First male footballer in 30 years to state his sexuality is gay.

So much respect for this young man.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61467159

This season has been a fantastic one for me on the pitch. I’ve made my first-team debut, scored 30 goals for the youth team, signed my first professional contract and shared success with my team-mates, going on a great run in the FA Youth Cup and lifting the Lancashire FA Pro-Youth Cup.

But off the pitch I’ve been hiding the real me and who I really am. I’ve known my whole life that I’m gay, and I now feel that I’m ready to come out and be myself.

It’s a step into the unknown being one of the first footballers in this country to reveal my sexuality, but I’ve been inspired by Josh Cavallo, Matt Morton and athletes from other sports, like Tom Daley, to have the courage and determination to drive change.

In reaching this point, I’ve had some of the best support and advice from my family, my Club, my agent and Stonewall, who have all been incredibly pro-active in putting my interests and welfare first. I have also confided in my team-mates in the youth team here at Blackpool, and they too have embraced the news and supported my decision to open up and tell people.

I’ve hated lying my whole life and feeling the need to change to fit in. I want to be a role model myself by doing this.

There are people out there in the same space as me that may not feel comfortable revealing their sexuality. I just want to tell them that you don’t have to change who you are, or how you should be, just to fit in.

You being you, and being happy, is what matters most.

Jake

Sad that we will be in this stage for a while yet. He's done the right thing for himself, it steals the thunder of the inevitable scrote who would have done it for him.

I don't think it will be as bad for him as some may think. A few lifetime bans for any toxic knobheads who want to pick on him from the home stands and it should be fine.

Brave lad, and I hate having to use those words. But they're still appropriate. Even in 2022.

If Pro football was played behind closed doors it wouldn’t be an issue, unfortunately fans of some clubs will get off on abusing him if he ever makes the first team. I mean look at Leicester fans working themselves up into a lather thinking every Brighton fan is gay and has aids

Tremendously useful for everyone to have the opportunity to be inspired by people 'like me'. Well done that man.

He’ll make the path easier for other players in the future. So brave. One day this won’t be necessary but for now - well done Jake.

It would be really helpful if this opened the floodgates, and a number of people followed suit. I do fear that just one person being out there invites more pressure (in multiple forms) than one person could reasonably be expected to bear. Wishing all the very best to him.

Yes but....they can all sod off, and sooner or later, will be named (not shamed becuase they have no shame) and banned.

He has taken the plunge now and will certainly know he will be a lightening rod for dick-head abusers, hopefully who will recive their just deserts.

Shame it needs to be news these days, but well done Jake. He’ll get overwhelming support I reckon and it might weed out a few more dickheads for long bans who feel the need to victimise him.

I desperately wish that in 2022 this wasn't news-worthy, but we are where we are.

I wish him nothing but the best, and genuinely hope that this is a hugely positive moment for him personally first and foremost (speaking from experience it will be a massive weight off his mind), and for football in this country.

Well done to a very sensible young lad taking a big step to help drag football (sadly) into the 21st Century
