Rob Sanchez 7 - should perhaps have saved the first one but he collected dozens of crosses and corners today and overall he was good
Joel Veltman 8 - I think it is Veltman who makes the hideous pass a few moments before JWPs goal but he makes a lot of good interceptions and tackles this game and is the best defender on the pitch today.
Lewis Dunk 5 - good first half, in the second he turns into the teams main problem through giving away the ball over and over again in dangerous situations.
Adam Webster 6 - somewhat rusty, couple of good tackles but also a couple of missed passes.
Marc Cucurella 7 - had a lot to do defensively and did most of it well, plus contributed a lot going forward. Not so good actions at the first Saints goal.
Enock Mwepu 5 - threatening runs but lost possession over and over again, pretty much every chance they have in the first half is due to Mwepu losing the ball.
Moises Caicedo 6 - fought hard but the experienced Southampton midfield won the battle most times.
Alexis Macallister 8 - good playmaking and lots of nice cutting passes. Best midfielder today.
Leandro Trossard 7 - had a pretty good game I think, didnt get to any opportunities but created a lot.
Neal Maupay 7 - great first half, less so in the second (when tbf he had very little to work with).
Danny Welbeck 9 - man of the match, very involved in everything today, even in the second half when the service was horrible he still made the most out of every situation.

Subs:
Solly March 7 - played well and Brighton improved a lot once he and Gross came on
Pascal Gross 7 - helped getting back the control of the game and also scored a nice goal that arguably wasnt offside

From watching it live in WSU:

Sanchez 5 -- shouldn't have got beaten on his side for that free kick
Veltman 7 -- intelligent
Webster 4 -- I'm a big fan of his, but that was a very poor performance, atrocious passing
Dunk 6 -- struggled a little bit but this was more to do with those around him
Cucurella 6 -- poor for their first
Mwepu 6 -- not at his best
Mac Allister 8 -- kept things ticking over
Caicedo 7 -- some great passages of play in there
Trossard 7 -- didn't see enough of the ball but made things happen when he had it
Maupay 6 -- great pressing, the rest wasn't really up to much
Welbeck 9 MotM -- cracking performance, pace, power, movement, impressive motor

Gross 7 -- lovely finish, a real shame about the shoulder
March 6
Sarmiento n/a

Officials 3 -- worse than Webster, and that's saying something. Gave everything their way. How they didn't pick up any bookings is beyond me, and that body check by Romeu on Welbeck was as clear a foul and a yellow as you'll see.

Really frustrating, and difficult to disagree with Southampton fans' assessment: 2 nil and you ...

Sanchez 4
Veltman 7 - a fighter, used his nouse when Hassenhuttl overloaded him (which was a lot).
Dunk 4 - likes to pass to Stains players
Webster 4 - likes to pass to Stains players
Cucurella 2 - a defensive shocker, chaotic, leading to the first goal, shouldn’t play as a LB in a back 4.
Mwepu 4 - energy, poor decision making.
Caicedo 4 - energy, poor decision making.
Mac Allister 4 - likes to pass to Stains players
Trossard 7 - got a really good look at his play second half, on another level.
Maupay 2
Welbeck 6

March 1 (I usually defend the guy)
Gross 6 - improved us in attack
Sarmiento n/a - to little time.

Potter 0 - changed the wonderful formula of no strikers, to two indifferent strikers, handing Hassenhuttl the gift of complete midfield control.

Also watched live from WSU and seriously struggling to see what you saw in Welbeck's performance that you give him man of the match?

Watching in the stadium so you get to see work and running off the ball, they gave us a lesson in passing football and winning every 40:60.

A horrible watch, as the ball pinged about our 18 yard box.

Thankfully Long and Adams are very average.

EPL games are controlled in midfield. The 4-4-2 gave Hassenhuttl a gift.

I thought Webster, Dunk and Cucurella were all poor today, especially Webster. Shame.

Not the first time he struggles in his first start after coming back from injury. Luckily he usually gets back to his best pretty quickly. Agree about Dunk but think Cucurella is treated harshly today, he played 1v2 a lot of times and didnt get enough support from midfield.

But Southampton also played 4-4-2...?

What is your suggestion - never again starting with strikers?

Sums it up for me. Thought we were decent in the first half and then lost our form in the 2nd half giving the ball away needlessly and stupid fouls and but still created far more than they did. Nothing like Burnley game capitualtion or even Villa and Norwich lack of effort.

Reading this thread, some see glass half full, others half empty, others see sand and sodium carbonate with some liquid and yet other dont see the glass at all.

Still opintions are like @rseholes, everyone has one

In an supposedly even matched contest, at least match up in midfield.

Stains didn’t leave midfield duties to Romeu and W-P, they were swarming all over us. That can only be because the ‘front 6’ worked in tandem to overwhelm Mwepu, Mac Allister and Caicedo.
