D-Day veteran Horace "Harry" Billinge has died aged 96 following a short illness, his family has confirmed.

Mr Billinge, from St Austell, Cornwall, was 18 when he was a sapper attached to the 44 Royal Engineer Commandos ahead of the Normandy landings.

He was one of only four of his unit to survive the storming of Gold Beach on 6 June 1944.

Yes, read this earlier. One of the last, but many in subsequent generations, inc. me, think we’ll go to our graves recognising Harry and co were the Greatest. Eternally grateful for the sacrifices they made, not just those that died but those that survived yet lost their youth to fighting for future freedom. It’s a shame within 2 generations many don’t cherish how hard won democracy is and how easily it’s lost.

It seems like only yesterday we said farewell to the last of the Great War veterans but now the last of the next generation are passing away. God bless them all, we owe them a debt we can never repay.
Rest in Peace Sir, you did your bit and then some
