If we weren't always 4 down for very little, and to be able to apply scoreboard pressure, he could afford to be more attacking.
Also for the current test not helped by injuries to bowlers who would have been expected to take wickets.

Hmm…we’ve just drawn a test away from home that on that first morning most expected us too lose…and then after conceding a first innings deficit actually didn’t capitulate …interesting timing

There is no replacement for Root or he’d be gone as captain. Simple as that really. Broad is the closest and he isn’t a guaranteed pick and arguably isn’t captain material anyway. We’ve got Root until (and if) Stokes decides he is up to it.
