[Albion] Tactics today

The tactics today are the reason why Potter won’t be looked at by any so called bigger clubs at this stage in his career.

Yet again we’ve contrived to make a team at the bottom of the league much better than they are and this has happened in previous seasons too. Just don’t know what he was thinking today playing a 4 at the back system with Duffy who has barely kicked a ball for months, it limited Cucurella and Lamptey in terms of getting forward and we gifted them goals. Sanchez had a v poor game and wonder whether he needs some time on the sidelines as clearly he hasn’t been as good this season…

Two wins over Watford. A draw at Norwich City and a victory in Burnley does suggest otherwise.

Problem stemmed from lack of choices at the back today IMO. Obviously not helped by the sale of BDB.
Oh and Bissouma seemingly disinterested.

What’s our home form like under Potter against the bottom clubs since he joined? Any team who can sit in banks for four resiliently has a good chance. Watford win this season but can’t remember many others - unacceptable if we have ambitions of being a top 10 club

On the radio, they played an interview with him before the game and brought up the fans. He went to great pains to say how wonderful the away fans are. Mentioned that there was more variety in the fans at home. He clearly is not over the being booed for failing to win v leeds.

There is clearly a problem when we play at home. Yes, there are exceptions, but going an entire calendar year with one home win when the bulk of the year behind closed doors suggests it's not all about the fans booing him after an 8th game without a win, and a couple of months since we had scored an open play goal. Our away form is pretty good, and better than our home form.

At half-time Warren was talking about how quick Potter is to make corrections, and expected him to make at least one change at half-time. No changes at half-time. Why not? Is he second guessing himself at home? Does he become too scared to make changes in case they make us worse and lead to more upset among the fans?

Absolutely this. Out of his depth today against Dyche. If uncle Tony really does want us to progress and become a top 10 team (at the end of a season) he will have to start thinking about Potters replacement. He clearly doesn't have the tactical nous required and can't motivate us to play well at home.

Who should he have played instead? Dunk suspended, Webster injured, Burn sold. He didn’t really have any other options.

Play Haydon Roberts and stick to the 3 at the back system that we've looked so good in this season, 4 at the back just doesn't work for us with the personnel we've got.

I was astounded that he hadn't made any changes at half time to a system that clearly wasn't working. We started the 2nd half with a bit of impetus but it was clear we weren't going to get back into the game as the same patterns re-emerged

Could something better be done tactically today? Probably. Not sure how much it would matter when plenty of players had a real off day.

Mixture of poor tactics and Burnley playing well. They started on the front foot and did a job to a man, exactly as you’d expect.

As for the Brighton tactics, obviously things had to be changed with the players unavailable. First half Brighton were too direct and inpatient in the build up. I hope this wasn’t by design as it’s clearly incorrect against Burnley. I can recall Pope claiming 6 crosses in the first half, all very easily done. Second half Brighton changed it up, but to no end product. The wind and poor referring decision did contribute to two Burnley goals and potential missed penalty, but overall Burnley were the better team and deserved the win. Worth noting they are missing key players too, but are also more accustomed to the style of play this game required.

Every single year Burnley turn up, do the exact same thing they always do and get a result out of it. It's not like they're doing anything special, it's the same thing and we always fall for it? Why? Surely it's not a surprise?

I agree with this. One of our greatest assets is the attack minded wingbacks. They are not traditional full backs.

He made a point of clapping the away fans for a long time at the final whistle on Tuesday. Nothing much new here though. Away fans at all clubs have always been better able to cope with poor performances than home fans. All about the day out.

Begs the question why we sold Burn as he was well suited to Potter's style of play. If we had to get £13million in then I can accept that but we can't challenge for the top 10 if we are going to sell key players. I can see Bissouma, Lamptey and Cucella going because other clubs would want them but not sure there was a big queue for Burn.

But if Potter was happy with the sale he must surely have based that on the possibility that Roberts would play at some point to keep 3 at the back and ensure we get Cucerella and Lamptey forward.

Yeah, I get that, I mentioned that because I didn't want to make it seem I was ignoring that he praised them, and to give context context to the comments he immediately followed it up with that suggested he really wanted to criticise the home fans, but was trying to restrain himself. That doesn't happen a lot. And it doesn't help things to be so effusive toward the away fans while barely containing your disdain for the home fans.

Well - he didn’t play Roberts today and we got slaughtered.

I didn’t agree with selling Burn at the time and agree even less now. He was first choice and at the top of his game when we sold him.
