[Albion] Post-game crowd control v Palace

Sorry if fixtures, but I'm trying to piece together what actually went on after the end of Friday's game. I've seen various tweets about people being prevented from leaving certain sections of the Amex, about a crush outside the north-east corner, about Palace fans being let out before home fans, about people being held back and denied access to the coach park.

I was exiting from the east and it was pretty crowded but I got through to the train queue without too much difficulty. Are people over-reacting or was there the usual police/stewarding miscommunication, as I;ve seen suggested?

Does anyone have the whole picture?

its a shame that a hundred or so Palace "ultras" and a few Brighton fans result in the mass policing effort seen on Friday, This must be as a direct result of those nob heads actions in rushing the turnstiles to get in without tickets last time they were here

They are the only side to warrant such a police presence, and some of the twitter posts and vids from them showing the mass herding of them at the end, and the somewhat bizzare chanting at Dunks Legends banner make them seem "proud" of themselves, as if that is how proper fans behave

We need both sets of fans to be vocal to make the atmosphere, but the Palace goons just go to far and as a result we have scenes like Friday night

There will be lots of criticism of Police and Stewards over how Friday was policed and stewarded, but we should remember the only reason any level of policing needed above the normal-is past behaviour of Fans (both Palace and to a lesser extent some Brighton)

OP I suspect you left very promptly.

We did from the NS and didn’t encounter the mayhem.

But looking back now, realise that we were in a tight funnel of fans leaving the NS as the roller door was shut, plus heard shouting and saw stewards rushing to block east-standers trying to get in for their usual post match pint with NS mates.

We all need to wait for Lord Justice Barber’s balanced report.

It might say:
- stewards amazing.
- police exemplary.
- a thank you to our CP visitors.
- once again appalled and frankly embarrassed by our violent contingent. Using cctv, in the coming months working with our partners, no stone will be unturned in identifying the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

It reminds me of a story told by Martin Perry of Championship The Leeds.

Their 'mob' got off the train at Falmer and stood on the platform.
Ms HighVis looked at them.
They looked at her.

Eventually she walked over and asked

'why are you all 'stood here?'
'We're waiting for our police escort'.
'Why do you need a police escort, the stadiums just there, enjoy the game'.

Apparently they didn't know what to do with themselves before eventually shuffling off.

We went down the steps towards east end of North Stand after clapping off the team and it was already packed and backing up trying to get down the steps. The concourse was heaving and it was a problem trying to work our way across to the bar. When we got there, we got a beer and stood next to the bar, but the crowd continued to file past us solidly for the next 10 mins. Sounds like the worst of it was just outside the North Stand exit next to us.

Keeping the roller door closed made the situation in the NS concourse worse, but it appears now that it was lucky they didn't open it.

The crowd outside the NS exit was East standers trying to get to the station, not get into the NS, but couldn’t due to the barriers.

I know.

But a harmless minority wanted to do the usual and get their NS drink - saw some being blocked by stewards and words exchanged.

I don't understand why the stewards don't stop fans going into the NS after the game for 5 minutes, that's all that's needed. I also don't understand why fans from the East and West Stands miss the last five minutes of a game to rush to get to the NS to get a drink. Ask seems very dim to me.

Good points.

Tip for those fans in the East and West you mentioned.
Watch the game until the final whistle, buy a drink in your own stands concourse and then walk to the North.
I’ve been to the North concourse after games ( not leaving early though ) and queued ages for a drink.

Do you normally leave by the North East gate ?
North West was shut causing the crush as the numbers built up trying to exit the NE instead

Yes.

I realised that a few hours later when nsc threads emerged.

The NE corner difference from normal I think was that 1,000’s were funnelled through the turnstiles. Pretty sure we normally go through the giant roller door. Which they close off a bit later, for the players to get to their McLaren’s and Hummer’s.

The club and police should count themselves extremely fortunate that they are not dealing with the aftermath of a major incident. Public safety considerations need to ALWAYS trump the wishes of Sky f*cking telly scheduling
