It only took 10 seconds of the trailer before my memory went straight back to that pod.
(As opposed to scratching my head in a 'that sounds familiar', stylee)
A sure sign of a good story.

Gentle very much describes that pod too.
I strongly recommend it, despite The Ross' bringing it to an end a while ago.

Phantom of the Open - a fascinating story. How much you enjoy the film may depend on how you take Mark Rylance doing Forrest Gump via Paul Whitehouse. For me, it was unbearable, just too irritating.

Just seen Ava and Ali. Love story
about working class Bradford involving change and growth. But actually fun, beautifully filmed, full of properly drawn characters and a very good varied soundtrack

Gorgeous homage to the 70's stalk and slash horror films ( Texas Chainsaw Massacre in particular )

So good to watch a horror that was not meh.... It's jumpy, scary and downright dirty...

A prequel already underway by all accounts

Watched Nightmare Alley. As with most stuff by Guillermo del Toro, I don't really understand the hype. It's a pretty standard film noir, with the odd touch of gore, but Bradley Cooper is lightweight compared to most of the old Noir leads, the twists are obvious to anyone who's ever seen a noir before and while the endings done well it's pretty signposted. It's not a bad film, just an ok one and at least 30 minutes too long

Me and the Mrs are just about to go and watch it. We know it's going to be cheesy and somewhat laughable but it should also be fun.

Seeing a few comments from the director of X about how much porn and horror have in common, particularly in the 70s. working outside the hollywood, looked down on, small budgets and struggling to find somewhere to shoot where people aren't morally opposed to what you're making. Sounded very much like an weak excuse to make a horror movie featuring a porn shoot, and thus including sex and nudity (which would be odd since sex and nudity is so frequently featured in horror).

But watching X and seeing the parallels laid out did kinda make a bit of sense.

I think I quite liked it. Did not pick up that Mia Goth played the wife as well as the main girl.

After watching X on Saturday, my initial response once the credits started rolling was to turn to my Mrs and say "what a load of shit."
After further consideration, I still hold the same opinion, it was indeed a load of shit.
I was expecting a tongue in cheek slasher, something with a bit of comedy, overly gory and a bit of fun. Unfortunately it tried to take itself too seriously and it didn't work for me. The acting was decent enough, production didn't feel cheap in any way, but the story was pointless and cringey. Big thumbs down from me. 2/10.

Also watched Deep Water, starring Ana De Armas and Ben Affleck. He's a total wet blanket who allows his wife to openly cheat on him because he doesn't want to lose her.
Bit of a slow burner but kept us interested. The characters are hateful though, I wanted both to meet their demise in one way or another. I absolutely love Ana De Armas, she is stunningly beautiful, but I have a real issue with people who cheat so I every time she was on screen I was watching with gritted teeth, she plays an awful human being in this movie made all the worse by a spineless Affleck who reinforces her behaviour by initially doing nothing about it.
A relatively average film in the end but worth a watch if there's nothing else in. 5.5/10

Nominated for screenplay (original) and Best International Picture (from norway), I saw The Worst Person In the World last night. I have been expecting to watch it on Tuesday at the komedia in a preview screening, but they had technical issues are were unable to show it.

It is structured as ‘a story with 12 chapters, an epilogue and a prologue’. It made it a little uneven, and jumped along the timeline in places. There was lots to like, enough to say it was good overall, but something stopped me really loving it and I’m not sure what. Maybe the audience? There were moments that felt like they were funny, but it didn’t feel right to laugh because nobody else did. It did have some of those ‘the plot point is conveyed by a close up of a person’s face where their expression changes slightly’ that you get in indie films a lot. It didn’t feel like the main character was changed all that much by what we see her go through over the course of the film, whichc can leave you with a sense of 'what was the point?'. But it does seem to be getting a lot of love, so maybe that thing that stopped me loving it was simply not being in the right mood.

Just sat and watched Moonfall with the Mrs. Wow!
I have seen some bilge churned out from Hollyweird but this is something else. The story is unbelievably shite, the acting is atrocious and the science is hilariously absurd, and that's being kind.
Let's skip over the fact that a shuttle found in a museum hadn't been stripped and decommissioned, let's ignore the fact they just happened to have a fuel tank and two SRB's laying about to power the shuttle, let's not talk about the use of a satellite phone when all the satellites have been destroyed, or that a white dwarf star was being used by an alien race to power a giant centrifuge which keeps the moon at a safe distance and in constant orbit. I want to know why the Ford Mustang Mach 1 had such little air time. That thing is beautiful and was the only thing worth watching.
Beyond awful, I can't begin to explain how laughable it was. 0/10.
Oh, and who managed to mate Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to create the conspiracy theorist guy?

Tbf the original is one of those movies that has passed me by, never seen it. Which is odd as I was 14 at the time of release and since become a fan of the movies directed the Scott brothers (Ridley much more so). Is it any good? Seems bizarre I have missed it.

I loved it at the time. The action shots are phenomenal, and whilst the story is a bit iffy, it's bloody good fun.

Just been to see The Phantom Of The Open based purely on the trailer.

Very disappointing. Being kind to give it 5/10.

I likrd the actors. I liked that its based on a true story. But apart from that... no thanks.

It was also my first visit to Connaught cinema in Worthing. I shouldn't really penalise the film because of the theatre, but I'm afraid I did.

We usually use The Dome. It is 100% better than the Connaught for access, drinks, comfort etc.

I went to see Morbius this evening. I was not expecting it to be good. It was not. It was dull (at 1hr44m it is on the shorter side for comic book movies these days, but I'm sure you could cut 30mins more and still not lose anything). There are often complaints about CGI robots fighting each other in other comic book/sci-fi-action/monster movies, I've not often really had an issue with that, but this one was largely cgi clouds swooping through places and it was impossible to follow, despite the occasional slow motion to try to help you keep track.

Operation Mincemeat was the unlimited cardholders preview at cineworld this evening. I went to see it.

It was fine for what it was, probably about what you would expect for a british WWII-era spy movie with such a cast.

Me and the Mrs revisited Top Gun a while ago as I told her I loved it as a kid, we both wish we hadn't. It's beyond cringey (especially the volleyball scene) and it's so homo-erotic (especially the volleyball scene!) I'm surprised brokeback mountain wasn't a spin off about Maverick, Iceman and Wolfman having a three way meaty dog fight.
This film is probably the reason I wanted to join the fleet air arm and still have a passion for aviation today, but I should've left it alone, and I can't see the new one being much better. I'll watch it, but I'm not expecting great things.

This is a relief to hear. I never watched it when it came out, and only when the trailers for the new one started coming more regularly I thought "hey ho, better get up to speed with the storyline so I know the characters etc when I inevitably have to see the new one". I only got part way through as it was exactly as [MENTION=25308]Gabbafella[/MENTION] says. I was amazed. Has a legendary/god like status for some of the people I used to work with.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
I liked the Harry Potter books, I mostly liked the films (first two were too child-aimed for my liking), enjoying David Yates work on the latter ones. I have not been particularly enamoured with the fantastic beasts series. I don't enjoy latter day Johnny Depp, and Katherine Waterston feels a bit bland to me. The series as a whole feels unnecessary, and stretching too long to tell a story that doesn't need five films. That's not to say I hate them, I enjoy them enough but don't view them as anything substantial.

I think if you've enjoyed the series so far you will enjoy this instalment. If you haven't, this won't turn it around for you. Though with Depp dumped and Waterston unavailable for much of the film, it did remove two of the things I didn't enjoy before and gave more time to Daily Show alum Jessica Williams, which I did like.

It's not as clever or surprising as it thinks it is (the main crux is that Grindlewald has means of seeing bits of the future so they need to have a complicated misleading plan to get the better of him - this plan is not so clever or complicated you don't see the ending coming, especially if you can count to 5).

It did end in such a way that the franchsie could stop now if they decide to drop plans to make 5 films - JK Rowling's anti-trans campaign, Johnny Depp's lost lawsuit regarding accusations of being a wife beater, Ezra Miller assaulting people and breaking and entering, all seem to be headaches for the franchise to deal with, along with diminishing returns on sequels before the coronavirus impacted third, and reports that Rowling hasn't even started writing the 4th it is possible this is the last one, and it feels like it would be as good a place as any to end it.
