I loved the Harry Potter book series. I liked the films enough. I’ve not been as enamoured with the Fantastic Beast series, and have found my enjoyment of the wizarding franchise somewhat dampened by JK Rowlings politics, but I’m excited to see Mads Mikkelsen take over from Johnny Depp (who never felt right) as Grindlewald.

David Gordon Green revitalised the Halloween franchise with his first movie in the series, deciding to ignore all the other sequels and follow straight on from the orginal 1978 film. Then he followed it up with Halloween Kills and the results was less well received (I've not caught it yet so don't have an opinion). This final entry in his trilogy/arc could go either way.

• Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

The big discussion around this is what to do with T’challa, following the death of Chadwick Boseman. Some want to see him recast to preserve Boseman’s legacy given what the character means and represents for so many people who don’t have as much representation in cinema and in superhero cinema in particular. Others feel like no one can live up to Chadwick and will always be in his shadow, and since the Black Panther is a mantle handed down, passing the black panther identity onto a new character is best. It’s not clear yet if this film will make a final call on that.

Strictly speaking, this should be in the 2021 thread, but I've only just got round to watching No time to die.
My Mrs likes Bond, and she said she wouldn't watch it again. She said it was alright, nothing more.
Me, I think the Bond franchise is outdated and boring. Same old story, gun shots, love interest, more gun shots, Aston Martin, some spy stuff, Bond gets double crossed, bond gets captured, lengthy speech about how the world is going to be cleansed for the greater good, Bond escapes, Bond saves the day, the end.
It's nothing new, it's the same regurgitated story and not very interesting.
Bourne and John Wick have both done similar things so much better in recent years.

Don't know why they missed it out, but April 15th is the new Mark Rylance film 'Phantom of the Open' release date. Really looking forward to what I reckon will be a hugely popular, uplifting, fun and emotional British comedy to lighten the load.

He got caught up in that Hollywood tax scheme thing a few years ago and lost most of his fortune. It’s why he makes any old crap these days. Occasionally he’ll hit on a good film. “Pig” from last year for example is very good.
Quite a few big stars got caught out. You can usually spot them, they turn up in dozens of straight to streaming dogshit.

Cage also spent millions on weird crap like dinosaur skulls, shrunken Pygmy heads and haunted mansions. It’s amazing what one can spaff $150M on!!

Morbius is reportedly moving from January to an April release. https://variety.com/2022/film/news/spider-man-spinoff-morbius-moves-release-date-2022-1235146263/ Though that seems to be America, don't know what the UK release will be, sometime we're the same, sometimes we're earlier, sometimes later. Currently just showing as 'April' for the UK on imdb.

I read a good interview with him a little while back. He's largely doing these bonkers "it's a job" films now because it keeps him out of trouble. He says if he's working he's not falling back into old habits.

Personally think he's on track for a bit of a renaissance. With his age and experience and, IMHO, acting chops he's one role away from being back in the big time.

This was the secret screening at cineworld this evening. Got a little applause at the end, I didn't think it was that good, but thought it was fine. Did look good. and I enjoyed the van morrison-heavy soundtrack (by van morrison!).

Watch "Willy's Wonderland". It's basically a rip off of the game "Five nights at Freddy's", it's so shit it's amazing, proper Cage craziness.

I think you’ll like it US.
It resonated with me as the maternal side of my family all live in Belfast and I spent long summers there through the latter half of the troubles. Seeing some of the landmarks on screen like the Harland & Wolff cranes was nice. It’s a much nicer place to visit now.
But yeah, enjoy. Music is great in it too.

I know there's a prime thread, but this is more of a 'new film I watched' rather than a recommendation to others - The Tender Bar. I watched because there's been some early awards buzz for Ben Affleck. I'm not sure this film would receive such awards buzz if it wasn't directed by George Clooney and starring Ben Affleck. I mean, it wasn't a terrible film. It felt like a decent TV movie adaptation of a book, but with higher production values. Based on a memoir-type book, the main character (the older of which was played by one of the interchangeable bland young actors that seem popular at the moment Tye Sheriden? Miles Teller? Ansel Elgort? Alden Ehrenreich?) takes us through his upbringing and efforts to get to an ivy league university initially to become a lawyer, by his single mother (lily rabe who I know from the american horror stories series), at his grandfather's (Christopher Lloyd) home, where his uncle (Affleck) acts as a surrogate father figure.

Ghostbusters - Afterlife

I went into this with pretty low expectations, being as every Ghostbuster sequel since the original has been complete and utter dogshit (particularly that utterly RANCID 2016 offering with all the shrieking women, I mean christ). But Afterlife I really enjoyed. Its sharply scripted, with excellent performances from the kids (Egon Spengler's granddaughter takes the lead, and she's very good). And there are steaming great dollops of nostalgia from the first movie, from the iconic ECTO 1 Cadillac, to the proton packs, traps and various Ghostbuster gadgets, all given proper reverence in this. There's just so much to like in this reincarnation. Particularly when Spengler Jnr gets arrested and thrown in jail:
