I've never been the biggest Gridiron fan but knew Madden well due to the videogames. RIP John.

Very sad news to wake up to. When I first started following the NFL in 1983 it was the enthusiasm and knowledge of Madden (along with his co-commentator Pat Summerall) that really helped make me a fan of the sport. Like Richie Benaud in cricket he was THE voice of football.

Yep, this. Probably got into NFL a year or so after that via the Channel 4 coverage. Madden was a commentator first and video game second for me.

The whole sport will be mourning a giant of a man. RIP
