Good grief, what a lot of shitholes on that list. No wonder Crawley's on it.

New city competition - Crawley entered

Well someone in Crawley Council has obviously not enough to do. They’ve applied for City Status!! That was a waste of time filing out the form. One of the criteria is “ cultural heritage, traditions and identity, along with links to royalty and famous local residents.” So that them out of the running - unless The Cure and Gareth Southgate matters

Indeed. Medway and Blackburn stand out! Oh and Colchester.

And Reading. Although size wise may have a better case than some.

Very surprised Colchester and Guildford haven't got city status. Thought they would have had it centuries ago.

No, just no, to Crawley. Some of the towns on the list have Cathedrals, locally Guildford and Rochester are on the list so why do they need to lobby?

What a pointless waste of everything - why is anybody bothering to 'create' more cities? Some places are cities, others are not - live with it. And how the hell can 'South Ayrshire, Ayrshire and Arran' ever be described as a city - it's a geographical area. What next - the 'City of East Sussex and West Kent'?

TBH, I also thought Colchester was a city, going back to Roman times and all like it does. I'm sure it was considered a city when Boadicea and co. were around.

Agreed. You can imagine the local councillors in these places, wasting time, effort and council tax payers' money arguing earnestly in their echo chambers to be awarded city status. Most of them don't stand a chance.

I had to check this one as I thought Guildford was already a city, probably because their football team is called Guildford City FC.

Elgin have some brass neck too in this regard

I've always been led to believe that Peel is the only city on the Isle of Man. And yet there it is, applying to become a city.

If I lived in Brighton I really wouldn’t be dis’ing Crawley!

Yes there are “better” places than either Brighton or Crawley to live but with a lower crime rate, cheaper housing, better job opportunities, better transport links, facilities and cleanliness Crawley beats Brighton every time.

Yet all the signs point to the town centre . Guildford Cathedral was used in The Omen.

It’s definitely a town, my curiosity got the better of me and wanted to know why the football club is called Guildford City.
