As mentioned before, the age and general state of the trains on the Seaford to Brighton line (not on match days) is quite something.
No, I'm fairly sure they are paying for an increase in the cost of fuel.

Oldest trains currently operating anywhere in the country, the 313s are either gonna collapse or be retired within the next few years.

It's clearly unfair that those who don't use the railways have to pay for it out of their taxation. The burden should clearly be on those who use them.
If that logic was applied to NHS the world would be a better place.
On my to do list next year is to write to my MP and ask for a refund for the taxes I've spent on other services I pay for that I don't use.
As a non car owner (and I'm sure car owners agree), why should I be pay for the roads ? I'm utterly tired of subsidising them.
