Brighton lost 2-3 at home to Darlington. 92nd in the league. Jimmy Case sacked next day.
25 years on and we have climbed 83 places!
For reference, on 3rd December 1996 Sheffield Wednesday were 9th (and Wimbledon were 3rd )

I have watched Darlington this season in national league north! Hereford also in our league. It is nuts how we have gone in different directions.

That was my daughter's first season. She has changed a bit too, now 33 and still watching. Her favourite player one Peter Smith, I think because he was a stood out and was a little different.

Why? I appreciate that us older fans (I've been watching the Albion since 1966) will always look back at that era and marvel at the transformation, but there is a generation of fans now who look back on the 'war years' with almost the same detachment as they look back at the Napoleonic era.

My neighbour and his sons are a good example. They're Amex STHs but only did they not go to the Goldstone or Gillingham - they didn't even go to Withdean. He's a Forest fan who did try to get his boys to follow in his footsteps, but swept along by the general enthusiasm when the Amex opened they wanted to follow their local club and he gave in. Their sole experience is the Amex era and they have different points of reference to me. Indeed if I try and talk to them about Archer etc their eyes glaze over and they try to get away from the mad old man next door banging on about the War.

25 years ago today 11th December 1996 Steve Gritt appointed manager, and the start of the Great Escape.
I know it's been said countless times on NSC, but we must never forget what happened that year, and the part played by the Albion fans in ensuring that this club was saved, and more importantly was worth saving.

Whilst the 25 year journey has been a remarkable roller coaster ride, and we should never forget where we came from, some people just seem happy to accept being an also ran. I think we owe it to our fans, past and present, to push on and try to be the the very best that we can.

100% agree. Although my roller coaster ride started over 45 years ago and has taken in many lows and highs over the years.
I sometimes think these discussions can get sidetracked into a "We should be lucky we are even in the Premier League" v "why aren't we getting into Europe every season?" type argument, but just as I remember being young and seeing Albion in the Cup Final, I want my son to be able to see some glory too, not just trying to survive in PL every season. That's why we all support a team because we want them to reach as high as they possibly can.

I agree, and believe that everyone associated with the Albion is trying to do just that. At the same time though we have to retain a sense of realism, this club of ours is never going to be a Liverpool, Man City or United, Chelsea et al, they all have the history, the buying power, and the resources to keep them at the very top.

If however we can match a Leicester or a West Ham, then l would be more than happy. What little old Leicester City acheived in winning the Premier League in 2015/16 is nigh on impossible nowadays sadly.

So sad that effectively Gritty was little more than a half season wonder at the Albion, and that he couldn't keep the heroics going at the outpost that was Gillingham.

Still let's all just be forever grateful for what he did for our club, and salute him for the legend that he undoubtably is.
