You can buy in Portugal for half a million. No need to spend 2 million.

Need to wait 5 years though, to get residency. In Cyprus 300k property investment for residency in 6 months, 2 Million gets you citizenship in 6 months.

Edit: The Citizenship in 6 months is no longer available as of November last year, residency still applies but it's non schengen so doesnt give you schengen travel rights. Looks like Portugal is a better option if you have the cash, as you can have residency without actually being resident, and then get citizenship after 5 years.

Getting residency would be much easier than getting citizenship though.

For full citizenship in France you need to speak the language and have a knowledge of France (just like the UK wants round the other way) however, to get a residence permit first you need a long stay visa (up to a year) this can be done online. When you arrive you can apply to your Prefecture for your residence permit, on their website it will have the detail. Basically they need to check you are who you say you are, have health cover and are going to be self supporting.

Yeah, residency through Golden Visa is immediate. Can apply for permanent residency after5 years.

Campaign for a referendum to rejoin the EU
It'd be quicker to work and live in Ireland for a few years and then get citizenship ? ???

Waiting to successfully rejoin the EU would be a longer term open ended strategy surely ?

Indeed having any connection to Ireland helps. Its kind of ironic that for the last couple of hundred years the Irish have suffered ( mostly because of us ) but now they have got ahead of us economically, socially and politically.

Really !!!

Easiest way is to have an Irish grandparent and apply for Irish citizenship by foreign birth. Then you can get an Irish passport and you have the right to residence anywhere in the EU.

The first step for this, which is joining the Foreign Births Register, has been closed for months (official reason is due to Covid), so this is unfortunately not an option at the moment.

Why?
If thinking of moving there to live it is very expensive. Tons of paperwork and trips to the consulate in London. You must have health insurance and a proven income of £25,000 a year.
As mentioned, the Golden Ticket is to sell up here and buy a property worth over £500,000 which gets you straight in.
