the "why" is to do with aspiration of being more than Facebook, in particular branch in to virtual worlds. Facebook is a product, the company will do more than that product. i doubt Facebook product will be changing name.

(Although, yes, I guess the product will stay the same as was the case with Google).

The parent company not Facebook the product. It'll be called some one-word, bullshit thing like "META" or "UNISON".

We'll all just still call it Facebook like we all still call Alphabet, Google.
