Another way of tracking progress is to look at this season's results relative to the same fixtures last season.

So, doing that, and swapping in the promoted teams in the same order as the relegated sides (ie Norwich for Fulham, Watford for West Brom and Brentford for Sheff Utd) we get...

2020/21 - Burnley 1 - 1 Albion
2021/22 - Burnley 1 - 2 Albion

2020/21 - Albion 1 - 1 West Brom
2021/22 - Albion 2 - 0 Watford

2020/21 - Albion 0 - 0 Everton
2021/22 - Albion 0 - 2 Everton

2020/21 - Sheff Utd 1 - 0 Albion
2021/22 - Brentford 0 - 1 Albion

2020/21 - Albion 1 - 2 Leicester
2021/22 - Albion 2 - 1 Leicester

2020/21 - Palace 1 - 1 Albion
2021/22 - Palace 1 - 1 Albion

2020/21 - Albion 0 - 1 Arsenal
2021/22 - Albion 0 - 0 Arsenal

Combined:
2020/21 - P7 W0 D3 L4 Pts 3
2021/22 - P7 W4 D2 L1 Pts 14

Relative:
2020/21 better: 1
Same: 1
2021/22 better: 5

Someone pointed out that our xG versus Arsenal was back to last season’s level but in atrocious conditions there was some explanation/mitigation. We played better football at times last year. This year we are getting results.

So which of the 20-21 draws (Burnley, West Brom, Everton and Palace) aren't you counting? Surely we got a point for each of them?

Potter’s mixed pragmatism, with our still great play. We’re more street wise eg Veltman hacking down counter attacking opponents early on in a move, running down the clock when in front.

Plus an element of luck which will even itself out over 38 games.

Excellent. Obviously we are doing better this time last year but it's good to see the results vs the same(ish) clubs rather than the 'we haven't played and of the big boys yet' line which gets thrown about.

We are 1st in league for tackles
We are 5th in table for passes
We are 2nd in table for long balls

This reflects what I am seeing on pitch in that we are winning the ball back quickly through pressing and have maintained our possession levels through passing but have definitely increased the number of long and direct balls.

Adding this to our passing game means we are much harder to set up against as we now have a range of ways to break sides down.

You see, I didn't bother with that because when I did that comparison last season it was highlighted to me that it wasn't fair due to the differing sides faced, which is why I did what I did above!

It's odd isn't it. We've had a supposedly "easy start" yet, last season made light work of Liverpool away and Man City at home while struggling v Burnley and Sheffield United.

Not sure what is "easy" for the Albion right now but there isn't a game I fear at the moment (without getting too entitled or Billy Big Bollox, I just think we're potentially competitive in any game).

Beating the lower teams is the huge improvement we've made.

We had terrific results (and performances) against the top teams last season. If we can match that and keep up our form against the lower sides we'll have had a very very good season.

Ha! After Norwich - there's that run of 6 games and we'll start to realise where we are...

An away win against Brentford is looking a tad better than a win against last seasons Sheffield Utd would have been too, at the moment, being the only side to have beaten them thus far, home or away.

Beat Norwich which won't be easy, as the international break falls kindly for them.
Will result in 2 easy games against just City and Liverpool!!

It's strange because unless we're playing Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool or Man Utd I'm sort of expecting us to get at least a point. I think once we lose a couple more I'll come crashing back down to reality, but a decent cup run and potentially europa conference league qualification is genuinely possible this season, which is huge!

Why does the International break 'fall kindly' for Norwich (relative to anyone else)?

What work can they do to change anything, when the bulk of their team will be away?

Of the side they took to Burnley on Saturday:

1 Krul - will be away with the Netherlands
2 Aarons - will be away with England U21
15 Kabak - away with Turkey
5 Hanley - away with Scotland
4 Gibson
30 Giannoulis - away with Greece
20 Lees-Melou
16 Normann - would be away with Norway, but is injured
23 McLean - away with Scotland
24 Sargent
22 Pukki - away with Finland

Substitutes

7 Rupp
8 Gilmour - away with Scotland
10 Dowell
17 Rashica - away with Kosovo
18 Tzolis - away with Greece
21 Williams
28 Gunn
35 Idah - away with ROI
44 Omobamidele - away with ROI

In our first couple of seasons in the prem, when playing the top 6 [esp away] I always thought we'd done well if we got away with only conceding FOUR !

Truly amazing times to be an Albion fan. I mean, when before were we ever able to say that we should be beating teams like Arsenal?

Never is the answer.
