As we all know 36,747 is our record gate

So I was wondering what was 2nd & 3rd highest?

So I'd like to know the definitive all time top 10

All at the Goldstone obviously

(1) 36,747 Fulham (div2)
(2) 33,601 Derby (LC)
(3) 33,119 Palace (div3)
(4) 32,979 Southampton (div2)
(5) 32,647 Spurs (div2)
(6) 32,589 West Ham (div2)
(7) 32,539 Wolves (LC)
(8) 31,203 Charlton (div2)

Only 8 there as I'm sure these games will make an impression on this list

Rochdale 71-72
Sheff Wed 76-77
Blackpool 77-78
Blackburn 78-79

Anyone know the official attendances for those last 4?

It has always seemsed odd to me that our 2nd highest recorded gate is about 4,000 lower than the biggest.

From memory:

Sheffield Wednesday 30,576 or 30,756
Blackpool 33,431 (or very close to that- certainly 33,400 and something)
Rochdale 34,766 (Goldstone Wrap)
Blackburn Rovers- don't know although I'm not sure it hit 30,000

I'm not sure that there was a single 30,000 crowd in the original trip to the attic. There were a few 29,000.

People were smaller in the Fifties. It was easier to pack more in because of the size difference.

Or we didn’t quote the real attendances in the Seventies.

Definitely one of those reasons.

I was at most of those listed. Derby game was absolutely packed and certainly wouldn’t be allowed these days.

I was at 7 of the 9 if you include the Chelsea cup tie. Also over 31000 v Darlington in div 4 in 1965.

Try FA Cup 4th Round 1967 against Chelsea, 35,000 and I woz there. The score was 1-1 and the replay at Stamford Bridge we lost 4-0 in front of 54,000.

Aye, aye aye aye,
Bonetti is better than Yashin,
Hollins is better than Eusebio,
And Brighton are in for a thrashing.

I was there too, South Stand with my brother, who was getting worried I was going to kick someone (unintentionally) because I was kicking every ball.

I was too young or not in this world for Fulham and Rochdale.

But went to every single one of the others.

1976 to 1979 great days, thank you Bamber/Taylor/Mullery.

How many home gates in that short period between 27,000 and 34,000? Surging terraces, magical times for a nipper.

Give it 10 years and there will be 40k and I'll be one of them, throwing my underwear at Graham "Graham the Grey" Potter!

Rochdale was reported (by The Daily Mirror) as 35,000. I am personally a bit dubious about that - it was certainly heaving, but didn't feel as packed as the 30,600 at the Bournemouth the day after Boxing Day in 1971.
The Villa game in 1972 (the Willie Irvine goal) was reported as being ticket only 29,135 - but I can vouch for the fact that many of us got in without a ticket (not without paying - just went in and paid at the turnstyle), so the number in the ground was well more than 29,135! The Argus reported the crowd was 35,000 - but it didn't feel as crowded as the Bournemouth match!
I guess in those days the 1972 equivalent of Paull Barber didn't know the name and address, phone number and bank details of everybody in the ground, so the numbers were a bit iffy!
We did average 25,000 at the Goldstone in 71-72 though, which was excellent for division three!
