Two bits of news

George Garton has signed a multi-year extension of his contract (it doesn't say how long that is)

People were speculating that he may be the next one off, but it looks like he's here for a while

Hants have also announced that they've signed Ross Whiteley. I had feared that he was on his way to us (as if we need another white ball specialist), so maybe there'll be cash free for another FC cricketer

Talk of Alistair Cook leaving Essex after some rows with management - would love to add him to our batting lineup and coaching staff.

Highly unlikely I know, but one can dream.

Good news you say?

I thought you were going to tell us the rest of this season had been cancelled.

the risk with Garton is be becomes a member of the England one day squads, and we lose him for portions of the season.

You’ll be telling me Salisbury & Kirtley have been offered 10 year contracts next!

All very underwhelming.

I'd take that, for sure.

Guess he'll just concentrate on the farming, though. The farm is in Bedfordshire, so not especially handy for Hove!

George Garton staying at Hove is good news. Feels like a bare minimum sort of achievement from the executive though. Very understandable rumblings of memberships not being renewed next season at the moment.

Rob Andrew has announced his retirement. No? Carry on.

Jamie Atkins (who I think is the pick of our young seamers) is fit for the bottom of the table clash with Derbyshire. Ibrahim's back too, so we won't have a tail beginning at no 6

He has a farm in Bedfordshire. He's not going to move further from it.
If he was going anywhere to play cricket it would probably be Northants.
His most likely destination is Test Match Special or Sky.

Pleased about Garton, but everything around Sussex smacks of inferiority.

Hope Rob Andrew goes….

Meanwhile Hampshire, with their lovely Test ground, are going for the Championship. Just think, they used to be the same level as us with their quaint little ground in Northlands Road. Now comparing us is like comparing the Albion with Aldershot.

And unlike previous periods of disparity between Sussex and other local teams I don't see how we get back from here. The whole structure of English cricket has been changed to support the Test grounds, and I don't see it changing any time soon.

Fair play to Hampshire, Durham and Glamorgan for investing to stay relevant. It's a shame there's no option for Sussex to do something similar, the county ground site isn't big enough to do anything too ambitious, and land is hard to come by for any sporting arena, as we found out.

Asking the experts here, as I’m just a keen spectator, have we effectively run out of money?

I thought knocking the pub down and redeveloping it was going to help?

Me neither. Cricket's changing. The Hundred has exacerbated it, but we were in danger of getting left behind anyway, the Spen Cama money just meant we could punch above our weight for a while, which was obviously great while it lasted.

And it's obviously easy for the likes of me to spout off saying "Well the club should sell Eaton Road and build a new super-stadium outside Horsham". We missed the boat on that as there's only a need for so many Test grounds and we're already at saturation point - especially in the south.

(Although as a pointless aside I don't think getting a site for a new ground would have been quite as bad for SCCC as it was for the Albion as we could have put a new ground almost anywhere in the county).

No, we haven't (as far as I know) ... but things are tight. I found out last week that one of the reasons we were playing so many kids is that we get money off the ECB for every game an U20 or U19 plays (I can't remember the exact details). Throw in the test match money, the Hundred bribe and the T20 finals money and I guess that we're staying afloat (or at least, keeping losses manageable).
The ground development should make the club viable in the future, but it will take some years.

It should be pointed out that being a test ground is not a passport to success. Durham were deducted a lot of points after they were bailed out by the ECB when they developed their ground for test match purposes.

Good point. Is there still scope / time to do something similar to Hants, with a site that starts 'small' with the space to build up the facilities as demand requires? It would need a big site somewhere, but it can't be impossible. I would require a new owner / backer for Sussex cricket, with some deep pockets. I wonder if Tony Bloom likes cricket?

They seem to be putting a lot of eggs into the women's game basket, lots of Internationals played at Hove etc.. I guess if that takes off it will get a bigger attendance than most games at the ground and TV coverage etc.. Maybe that is the next best option.

Regardless the Men's team are in for a prolonged period of being a complete non-entity in the county game, until the inevitable move towards the franchise model and Southern Brave becoming the only 'county' side and playing 4 day and one day cricket, and Sussex becoming a feeder minor team for them. Maybe with the Mens team in Hampshire and the Women here.
