VAR round 12 (2027 edition)

VAR will only become involved when a player is accused of having an affair with another players wife.. etc etc..

Hopefully it'll have been phased out to that extent and we can all get back to celebrating a certain goal a second after it hits the back of the net.. ???

cause more problems to be created on top of existing ones. Far from improving, the whole system gets worse.

There's a surprise, garbage comments from garbage Mike Riley!

They already ignore some incidents where there is minimal contact. Take Connolly buckling under the challenge of Maguire!!

VAR will only ever improve when the imbeciles that run games on the pitch are not the ones allowed to adjudicate sat behind a screen. However, what have they done, only gone and made Mason a full time VAR official!!!

Unless the ball has just gone in the wrong net, so a) You won't be celebrating anyway and b) if it means we have just lost or drawn you will be really hoping that it was offside or handball or something, anything that the officials did not see or want to see and disallow it.

The ref gave that Sterling pen on his first view. It was debatable - but was it a "clear and obvious error" to award it ? Nope. In which case, as the rules state, VAR shouldn't even get involved. If it wasn't a clear and obvious error, then the original call stands.

Then you've got Riley saying use of VAR should be "dialled back". So what do you want Mike ? WHAT DO YOU WANT ? Because in the same sentence he's saying that pen should've been chalked off as apparently the contact was "minimal".

Shambles.

we saw how it can work, less is very much more. especially in offside. only obvious incorrect decisions go to VAR, if they need to get lines out its not obvious. width of lines doesnt matter if they are measuring toes vs random parts of outstretched arms from 15deg off parallel, will still make stupid decisions.

Use VAR as they did in the euros.....sensibly and discreetly.

So Mike Riley is saying the reason VAR worked so well at Euro 2020 was because they had more staff working on each match at VAR HQ.

This is what UEFA said about their VAR before the tournament.

At each of the 51 EURO matches, the main video assistant referee (VAR) will be accompanied by an assistant video assistant referee (AVAR), and offside video assistant referee. The VAR is the leader of the team who will be the main point of contact with the referee, with the task of focussing on incidents. The AVAR will concentrate on following the match, while the offside VAR will evaluate all potential offside situations. The team will be accompanied by three operators, as well as a VAR support assistant who will act in a coordination capacity.

This is what the Premier League say about its VAR set up.

Every Premier League match will have a VAR, Assistant VAR (AVAR) and a Replay Operator.

So the only difference I can see is UEFA has an additional dedicated offside video assistant referee. Two more video operators and a coordinator working on each match.

So rather than Mike Riley muddy the waters more by messing with interpretations again, why don't the PGMOL just copy the structure that worked so well for UEFA?

We have the richest league in the world but are too tight to splash out on 40 VAR back office staff that would cost less per season than Gary Liniker earns for presenting Match of the day.

Mike Riley is not fit for purpose and should be sacked.

How can we get rid of him?

The premier league website noted that the thickness of the line doesn't (or didn't) have an impact on the accuracy, because it was always based on the side of the line furtherst from the goal. Making the line wider in that situation does not change where the line starts (i.e. where they note the part of the player closest to the goal is).

The key thing that this article clarifies (which I've not seen in previous releases) is now, if the lines overlap the benefit of the doubt will be given to attacker. Now that they are taking that approach, the thickness will come into play. e.g. If the line is two pixels wide, and the difference in their position is three pixels. there won't be an overlap. but if the line becomes four pixels wide there is an overlap. The emphasis should really be more on the overlap than the thicker lines, imo.

I wish we could turm the clock back 3 years. I quite liked football back then accepting a few errors from the officials and debating the issues in the pub in the evening.

The referee should run the game and only use VAR when he or the assistant referees have doubt in their decisions. All goals should be checked for offsides and hand balls and then bookings and bans should be awarded retrospectively after a match for challenges that go unnoticed by the officials

The Euros showed how VAR should be used. Unfortunately our bunch of slow, unfit and incompetent match officials just aren't good enough to uphold the standard of officiating (including VAR) that we saw in the Euros.
