As a teacher who teaches e-safety, I can maybe understand her statement if she means that very young children are often exposed to the worst kinds of porn and that creating some kind of understandable framework may be a good thing. If she means we should allow children to see healthy relationships without the sexual aspect, I would possibly agree but she has created a furore as her tweet was headline-seeking and understandably drew ire. She doesn't really mean expose kids to soft porn does she?

I'm afraid the genie is out of the bottle here. Until teenage boys decide they want to watch two people going at it under a duvet with their socks on, porn will still be prevalent until the internet providers decide to do something about it... and as a big revenue stream they may decide to stare out of the window for a bit longer with their fingers in their ears singing la-la-la.... ???

I have a feeling that it'll be the younger generation who decides it's 'not cool', then something will happen.

The headline is barmy, but the detail sort of makes sense, but it's the wrong approach in my view.

What needs to happen is a tightening of the access to porn. It is way too easy for children to access.

I have seen instances where primary age children are either curious, which is natural, or they have stumbled upon things they really wish they hadn't. It's pretty difficult, especially having to explain to a parent that their child has seen things that have instantly taken their naivety. Porn is so prevalent it's not a wonder that this happens.

I hope not. I’m a teacher too and think she is raising an important issue with perhaps a less than sensible solution. I think she means there needs to be more open and regular sex education. And I’d agree with that.

Sexual violence is increasing between teenagers according to reports here in Norway. One of the main reasons being teenagers getting a warped impression of what sex is and what their partners want. This is also happening at increasingly younger ages. This is due to children being exposed to hard core porn at a young age, either by accident or not.

I’m not sure about porn for children but children should have an awareness of what it is, why it is made and when it is ok to watch it. The problem is that that the age to have that discussion can vary hugely from child to child.

You make some good points. I am working only in Primary and the age of children exposed to porn is definitely decreasing. However we don't want to unnecessarily force an end to sexual innocence on young children, but yet how do we contextualise the issue for those who have been exposed to such material?

There was something like that. It used to be called 'Jackie' and it was published weekly and read by thousands - if not millions - of young teenagers. Aimed at girls, but far more boys than would admit it will have read it too. Discreetly! Picture story lines such as 'does he really love me?' and 'do you think we're ready to go all the way?'

It was a shame they stopped publishing it!

It may prove that she was making a reasonable point (badly) but yes, perverts would certainly latch onto any opportunity to find ways to manipulate the situation.

It needs to be harder to access.

Get back to printing it, semi glueing the pages together and hiding it in hedgerow up and down the country.
Will also encourage the youth of today to reconnect with nature.

It’s always been quite easy, hasn’t it? I remember as a kid stumbling across a ‘free’ high quality porn site - the only catch was you had to access it via a premium rate dial-up system. Essentially, it meant I could circumvent the need for a credit card I obviously didn’t have - it just meant mum and dad’s phone bill would be slightly higher that month. No real problem, I only needed a couple of minutes use at a time, such was the fury of my teenage hormones at the time.

All good, until I almost got busted mid-spaff one day, quickly closed everything down, put my pecker away and went and did something else for a bit. Except I didn’t shut everything down. I don’t quite recall how many hours the premium porn-dialler was left running for, or quite what the phone bill was, but I have seldom seen my old man more angry (and he was one angry bàstard growing up, let me tell you).

Of course, I’m recounting this story with a wry grin on my face - boys will be boys and all that, and I’m sure even my dad sees the funny side of it now. But the reality is, I’m now the father of a 7 and 5 year old and whilst they’re a bit young to be exposed to this kind of thing (I hope), they’re probably not as far off as I’d like to think. It’s hypocritical, but I’d be mortified if they were looking at some of the things I was watching aged 13 or 14.

Then again, there’s lots of things I was doing at that age which would genuinely keep me awake at night if I knew they were getting up to.
