As a teacher who teaches e-safety, I can maybe understand her statement if she means that very young children are often exposed to the worst kinds of porn and that creating some kind of understandable framework may be a good thing. If she means we should allow children to see healthy relationships without the sexual aspect, I would possibly agree but she has created a furore as her tweet was headline-seeking and understandably drew ire. She doesn't really mean expose kids to soft porn does she?

I'm waiting for NSC's resident expert on the subject, he deals with it at all levels...

The world has certainly changed, it was National Geograpic and Amateur photographer that supplied my fist tugs.
Finding a soggy Men Only in the bushes was the pot at the end of the rainbow.

isnt this what the Dutch do, or something similar as part of their school programme? i see she's being pounded on twitter, unclear if people are against the idea in principle or that its from daughter of an ex-tory politician.

Adults are allowed to drink alcohol, but many still take drugs.

Creating an extra option for ‘kids’ won’t stop them looking at ‘harder’ things. Only add an extra option and arguably a gateway.

Like others I think there is a good point being made here in terms of the problem. I am not a prude about porn for adults. Fill your boots (if boot filling is your thing). But it horrifies me to think that increasingly young children are 'learning' about sex through easy access to hard core porn.

While her solution doesn't 'feel' right, and she may well be attention seeking I also can't come up with anything much better. The question of greater restrictons on access has been argued to death. I think personally it should be tried (the main argument against seemed to be 'why should I be slightly inconvenienced when accessing videos of women being choked, just to help the emotional development of young kids waaah waaah don't take my porn away etc') but I accept that the technical difficulties involved may make it only partly effective. So maybe other approaches - a modified version of what is suggested by Ms Gill, should also be considered. If we think the the status quo is harming children, then we really should be attempting something to change it, not just shrugging our collective shoulders
