Interesting opinion piece. I agree with the sentiment but not sure that would boost Labour right now. I think perhaps the time has past for all that from Labour as a party. They missed the window in my opinion. They blinked.
However, I have no doubt any party that comes up with a realistic plan for re-joining the EU would do very well. In about two years time, when Covid is fully managed and the harsh realities of the Brexit mistake kick in, I think we could see our country come to it’s senses.

I don't see any political party reversing the decision. All that's going to happen is gradually, we're are going to fall back in line with EU regulations and rules, but with no influence over them or seat at the table. It will simply be an exercise to try and minimise some of the issues that we have now created with no financial benefits over trying to minimise those costs, overheads and administration that our 'good deal' has put in place :dunce:

First up - Northern Ireland Protocol.

What alternative is there other than a Swiss-style veterinary agreement as a way to reduce most checks on goods coming into Northern Ireland from Great Britain with the UK required to follow all EU agri-food rules ?

I'm sure that anyone who thinks this won't happen will be happy to outline their alternative solution to the NIP (and maybe forward it to Johnson and Frost)

The beginning of the drip drip of EU regulations and rules being re-introduced over the next 30 years. Who could have seen it coming ???

It's pretty obvious that leaving has been bad and the effects will progressively get worse as we proceed on our course to the rocks ahead. It's The Emperor's New Clothes though as virtually no one in the Tory Party has the balls to admit it it was a mistake and how much worse off we will all be because of it.

It's an open goal for the Tories to accuse Labour of being out of touch with the slim majority in favour See how Johnson always tries to beat Starmer using the bollocks about leaving the European Medicines Agency meant we could approve our covid vaccine faster, which has been proven to be false but, hey ho, with Johnson's lies he can stretch the thinnest half truth an incredibly long way with no shame because no one will call him out on it ( apart from Dawn Butler MP ! )

Frankly, we need to re-join or align to almost every EU standard and accept the European Court of Justice as being the arbiter for disputes and agreements but, Johnson and the swivel eyed loons can NEVER accept that so, we are stuffed.

No, I'm not sure rejoining is really on the cards and will actually fix any division in the country.

Most of our problems are because of the type of Brexit chosen by the fools in charge.

What we need is to "Get a Better Brexit Done", and I hope that becomes Labour strategy.

That means staying out of the EU but being in the Single Market.

A bespoke UK pillar could be too difficult, so membership under the EFTA pillar may be more realistic. No doubt the *rule taking myth* will be trotted out in lazy opposition but any research will show this isn't how it works.

And back on topic,

Although that is a very sensible way forward and resolves a whole raft of issues, it still represents a U-Turn for the cult that is Johnson and they won't accept it.

It's fairly obvious from the lack of any postings on any Brexit related thread (even when invited) that the penny has started to drop for a lot of the ardent NSC Brexiteers of 6 years ago. I think them admitting it to themselves and coming out and saying it (and actually trying to suggest a way forward from this complete clusterf***) are still two very different things and will take them time to process.

Sadly, I think it's going to be small steps for the next couple of years before reality properly hits

Sadly you are right.

Nothing changes until Johnson falls, at the earliest.

The next big battle is when Johnson is deposed.

If a one nation pragmatist can take charge all may not be lost. If an extreme ideologue takes over then it's not so cheery.

It's pretty much all he has, after all, he's never going to accept (publicly, at least) that there's any kind of failing with Brexit. I really don't know why he even bothers to comment, tbh, although if he was to start a thread about self-abuse and the aforementioned toiletry habits, his posts would have some relevance and he could even become a legend in his own lunchtime. His little posse would love it. Bless 'em all. :lolol:

whats the adage about generals fighting the last war? even suggesting return to EU will turn off millions of voters, its the old battle and was lost. make a case for a productive re-engagement for close integration with Europe for promotion of trade and bi-lateral cooperation, etc, they might get somewhere.

I'm sure Labour can find other ways to lose the next election! They'd stand a much better chance of winning if they just came out and said, right, that's it, we've left and have no intention of going back into the EU, and it's ruled out in our manifesto. That would quickly mend the crumbling 'red wall' - but of course all thise Hampstead socialists at the heart of the PLP won't let that happen!

It's a dilemma isn't it...

Almost everyone who has no embedded emotional attachment to 'Leave' recognises there are few if any practical benefits and we are likely to be increasingly worse off as time goes on.

For political advantage though, few MPS dare say so.... yet!

So we lumber on, hoping for the best but continually disadvantaging ourselves, until one day we may reach a point where the alternative argument gets some traction - possibly when supermarket shelves are regularly empty and consumers feel the effects personally and directly....

This.
In 2017 Jezzbolah made no mention of reversing the democratic will of the UK electorate..result hung Parliament.
2019 stood on a anti Brexit ticket..result, 80 seat Tory majority.
The last thing the Labour Party need to be encouraging re-joining a busted flush.

Never going to happen all the time the thickos, who now know its a balls up and will ruin the country, refuse to admit that they made a massive mistake due to being thick and ignorant.
The best they can do is say "let it go".

I think 'let it go' is either a typical 'Disney style' three word meaningless slogan beloved of the mendacious Johnson or an attempt to let the world know we are sticking with our 'Emperor's New Clothes' type nakedness for the foreseeable future.....

Very true, although I would like to see the OP going door to door out campaigning selling his big election winning idea of rejoining the EU, (ditching the pound) in a few years time [emoji1]

In other news, yet another Brexit dividend... cheaper wine [emoji485][emoji106]
