do we want housing? there is a large shortfall of homes to keep up with demand. once we get past the nimby arguments, complaints are there isn't the infrastructure. larger development come with infrastructure. this is how most the towns we live in came about in the first place.

or we decide we dont want more housing, we'll make do with what we've got. thousands can move to vacant property in the north perhaps.

who owns the land and may profit from it shouldn't enter into it, we address the housing needs or we dont.

The only way Eton College could get planning permission would be if the entire country had some kind of ruling elite who are completely self serving and base all their decisions on what school you went too.

Most settlements in that area appear to have grown more organically, though. And the cynic in me doubts whether Eton College will be providing much affordable housing.

Eton College sits on 1,600 acres of land, including 200 acres of playing fields alone.

If the income from £50,000 per year school fees is not enough for the college to make ends meet, forcing them into a property development sideline, perhaps they'd like to build some houses on their own land?

if by organic you mean at times in late 1800's, interwar and post war periods thousands of homes at a time were built onto side of existing villages and towns, yes.
affordable housing is part of planning, made a condition of the planning. could make it 100%, tied to housing association for local workers. thats the way forward, not "no building here". i doubt Eton much care the demographic of the residents. lets focus on the issue whether we, the population, have sufficient housing or not.
