With England’s crunch football match looming it begs the question - has anyone ever swum anything but front crawl in a ‘freestyle’ swimming race, Olympic, Commonwealth Games, Seaford Head School pool or otherwise? Why not just call it a crawl race? Could an ‘aggressive’ butterfly stroke or a rapid side stroke ever best a front crawl? Hmmmm...

???

All but one triathlon I've done has involved me doing breaststroke for the swim leg – which is essentially 'freestyle', although I don't think backstroke is encouraged.

I simply couldn't do crawl properly because of breathing issues, but I found that I was actually quicker than quite a few people doing crawl. Then I re-learned how to swim and nailed the swim leg as part of an Ironman in a time that was WAY quicker than I'd imagine.
