While I don't claim to be a full blown vegetarian or vegan I am actively trying to eat less meat and dairy for environmental and health reasons. I'm not trying to virtue signal here, I just want people's recomendations and advice on nicest supermarket ranges/products and even fast food & take away options.

Obviously there's Quorn but I find their products often don't quite hit the mark with taste and texture. I've had Linda McCartney sausages which are pretty good.

I had the Burger King plant based Whopper today and it was really good! Tasted like a proper chargrilled burger.

What do YOU like?

Ps. if you don't agree with or can't see the point of eating less meat, I don't care and you don't need to say anything.

Personally, I don't try to find substitutes to meat, I just eat dishes that dont have meat in them normally. Plenty of vegan dishes in traditional Greek cooking for example. East Asian food is delicious without the meat.

This.

There are so many amazing fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes. Just enjoy them without trying to replace the meat in your meal.

Ah yes, I am aware there are lots of dishes that are "naturally" vegan and not a meat substitute. I wasn't necessarily looking for meat substitutes. I was just wondering what specifically do people enjoy.

I’m not following the same path but after getting very lucky with a bowel tumour scare just over two years ago, on discovering the significant causal link to red meat, as a part substitute I have lentil soup as a lunch alternative two or three time a week.

Very nice and packed with protein.

I gave up eating meat almost 4 years ago for health reasons, I’ve never eaten a veggie or vegan burger, I had veggie sausages with a breakfast but didn’t like them, never eaten Quorn.
I’m not a vegetarian as I do eat fish, and didn’t really eat fish until I gave up meat.

Not sure I could give up dairy as I like cheese and eggs too much, I also like milk in my tea although I’ve had oat milk in tea and enjoyed it.

To paraphrase an old quote:-

'not eating bacon doesn't make you live longer...

...it just feels like it'.

I don't want to give up fish either but try to eat ethically sourced etc. And yeah my biggest weakness is also cheese but I only have oat milk now.

I think the important thing is don't worry about feeling hypocritical. If everyone did something rather than nothing to cut down on meat and dairy it would make a huge difference.

Yes vegan burgers are now on another planet than a few years ago.

Not something I would eat at home (or very often out) - after having one out of curiosity last week at Hache Burger, I won't bother with a meat one again when I return.

They use the Beyond Meat brand. It also came with vegan cheese which I didn't really notice in a burger either.

One of my favourite things is Aubergine parmigiana. Since that is made with

1) A mild cheese mozzarella which is relatively easy to "spoof" with a vegan cheese

2) A hard string salty cheese like Parmesan which can be replaced with Yeast Flakes.

I use this stuff in "normal" cooking. It has a remarkable cheesy wotsit umami "hit" and I add it to macaroni cheese.

In that respect Pizza is something relatively easy to "veganise". I made one out of curiosity and took it into work. It went down very well with the yoghurt knotting Guardian readers.

I just wondered as seeing this type of stuff is going on all the time nowadays, is it just a fad or Is there any genuine evidence that you will live longer and never need viagra?

There is plenty of evidence that red meat causes cancer - among other nasty diseases - but it's more about saving the planet rather themselves for many people. I kind of agree with them although I've only cut my meat consumption back rather than out completely.

The farts that most vegans produce would suggest to me they've never once needed viagra. Nor indeed contraception, a late night shower or a debate over who sleeps in the wet patch.

That may have been true in the 80s when beans where the vegan protein of choice, but I'd argue today that meat eaters farts are far worse than a vegans.

This is two headed coin, I used to fly gliders in my earlier years and a fellow pilot was a senior doctor at the JR hospital in Oxford. There is an enzyme in red meat that is necessary for us to " operate correctly ". It cannot be replicated artificially. I'm now 75 with oestroarthritis and have been recommended to eat calcium rich foods, cheese, dairy products. So I'm in the eat meat camp..
