That’s what I did with John Lewis home insurance.

We made three claims in three years for three damaged phones/tablets.

They then loaded the home insurance premium from £300 to £800 per annum. No other insurer would then touch us “due our claims history”, We were in effect trapped until after a further three years, other insurers would take us on and at a reasonable premium.

The lesson to me was either pay to get devices fixed, or take out purely device insurance with a specialist.

Watch out for small print shysters (by which I mean the firms that offer insurance on your mobile phone).

Scenario 1 - I went into a mobile phone shop to buy a mobile with my daughter who was starting at secondary school to buy her her first phone. At the shop, I took out an insurance policy. The phone got damaged - I claimed on the insurance. "Oh no sir, it is only covered if you personally damaged it - as it was you and not your 12 year old daughter that paid for the policy, it doesn't cover damage when she had the phone when it got damaged" (this even though I'd never even touched it - it was passed straight into her enthusiastic little hands, and it was clear to all parties that I was buying the phone for her).

Scenario 2 - later, she lost it. We checked with the police (after re-tracing her steps that afternoon to see if it was lying un-noticed somewhere) to see if it had been handed in - long shot in this day and age I know. No luck - so made a claim - "Sorry sir, you invalidated your claim by informing the police before you told us; the terms of the policy re that you must notify us first."

Few years ago now - IIRC I won one out of the two after a long battle - can't remember which one now. All I do know for a fact is that I was dealing with crooks and shysters. Give 'em a wide berth. C**ts.

They always get you in the end.

I've never bothered with phone insurance for me or Mrs H. If I had, I would expect to have paid out over £1000 in premiums over the last 10 years. We've been fortunate (or careful), haven't lost a phone and have broken a couple of screens.
The way I look at is that I now have £1000 to cover any replacement I might need.

My Lloyd's bank account covers mine, just need to upload the proof of purchase and the imie number

Same here....................I know there's a lot of noise around the value of 'packaged' bank accounts but for me in addition to the standard banking stuff the WW travel insurance, mobile phone insurance and full AA cover makes it worthwhile (and simple)

I've owned a mobile phone for about 23 years now; my wife at least 20. In that time I've never broken a phone and my wife cracked one screen on her current Google Pixel 3A - we sold it as damaged on eBay and bought a new one, at a net cost of about £150.

I’d agree with this. Unless you are particular clumsy or forgetful I’d say it’s probably cheaper to just take the hit when you either lose or damage your phone....this is certainly the case for me.

Couldn't agree more... less hassle for £15.00 per month... jobs a good one!

Take them to cash converters. I got nearly £150 for a couple of old phones that'd been laying around in my drawer dormant for several years.

Its free money, sitting there.

I wouldn't bother, just buy a decent case for it.
