Think this needs to be renamed as the "well its the end of the game for now until everyone is back home and in bed" whistle.

Haven’t players been carded in the tunnel after a game?

That's what I was thinking but perhaps others were still on the pitch?

I believe the ref can send a player off in the tunnel after a game, his authority to do so remains until the players are in their dressing room.

It’s only decisions that require the restarting of the match after the half time or full time whistle that cannot be made if the ref has left the pitch (if the ref had left the pitch at full time vs Man Utd then he couldn’t have restarted the game for the penalty).
