A good one this ...

1-0 vs. Stockport County, 2008/09 League One

Saturday 2nd May, Att: 8,618

Winner: Group F - 44.57%

The third highest ever attendance at Withdean saw Albion pull off the greatest of escapes. Having looked certainties for relegation in March, we staged a thrilling late revival, culminating in us going into The final game of the season with our destiny in our own hands. Beat Stockport County, and we would be safe.

In the 73rd minute, visiting goalkeeper Conrad Logan parried a shot by Gary Dicker – playing on loan from County – and in nipped Nicky Forster to score the only goal of the goal. As Forster wheeled away, he could be heard shouting ‘It’s me, It’s me!’

Thanks to Russell Slade and an incredible team spirit, Albion had somehow survived. I wonder where we would be if we had lost on that day. As for County, they were relegated the following season, before long, they would be playing in the sixth tier of English football, as we sat in the Premier League.

‘Withdean felt like the best place to be that day, basking in the glory of a win. I will never forget the final scenes where some very brave (and strong) fans lifted Russel Slade aloft to thank him for saving Brighton rom the drop” (Ralph Harrison)

4-3 vs. Carlisle United, 2010/11 League One

“Bridcutt left footed, it’s the stuff of champions, it’s the stuff of dreams”

Any notion that this was going to be another straightforward day at the office went out of the window though inside of three minutes. Brighton failed to clear a corner effectively and Tom Taiwo was on hand to fire past Casper Ankergren for 1-0. Even the very best of Albion sides like Poyet’s champions struggled to defend set pieces.

Glenn Murray soon equalised with his 17th goal of the campaign after collecting a clever hooked pass from Ashley Barnes. When Ashley Barnes latched onto Bridcutt’s through ball to put the Albion 2-1 ahead eight minutes into the second half, most were expecting Brighton to move through the gears and secure a comfortable three points.

The visitors though had other ideas. No home defender got close enough to Ben Marshall who took advantage of the space to beat Ankergren on the hour mark. Parity lasted for all of three minutes. Greer showcased his underrated playmaking ability by splitting the Carlisle defence with a superb forward pass, releasing Barnes who again made no mistake.

As was Withdean tradition, large numbers of the South Stand had abandoned their seats in favour of watching the final throes of action from the running track. Those stood at pitch level waiting to leave at the west end of the ground could scarcely believe their eyes when Carlisle equalised again at the opposite end of the Theatre of Trees.

With Kishishev on the pitch, Bridcutt found himself in a more advanced role and he took full advantage as the ball fell to him 25 yards out, hitting the sweetest volley with so much power that Collin did not have time to move before it hit the back of the net.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
The Stockport Great Escape with Russell Slade.

Yes the Carlisle game was great but not as good as the Dagenham & Redbridge game, and in the long run we won the division easily.

Without the Great Escape we would've descended into League Two and the rest would've been history,

Has to be Stockport, great day.

Always forever grateful to Slade, OGH and Owusu for inspiring that amazing escape. Apart from a little blip at the start of the following season (signing Graeme Smith!) and Hyppia's brief spell, as a club we haven't really looked back since then.

Russell Slade;
  • The 5 loanee debutants at Leyton Orient, after Slade's "power to the people" salute in his borrowed suit having been appointed the following day
  • Bald
  • Wore a cap
  • Tommy Fraser and Doug Loft formed part of a successful midfield
  • The re-emergence of Gary Hart
  • Glenn Murray unavailable due to injury for the run-in
  • Thrashed Yeovil 5-0 to give us the chance to get back into it
  • Looked down and out after a 3-2 defeat at home to Swindon, only to go and get a win at Colchester to get things moving
  • Didn't play Colin Hawkins

What a man. What a houdini act. Gary Dicker and Elliott Bennett were signed under his watch and became legends, he also got Navarro in. For a man who was here such a short period of time he had such a big impact on the team and the club. He restored the love between fans and team.

Stockport for me although both great days. The commentary for Bridcutts goal goes down in history.
