3-1 vs. Reading 2001/02, Division Two

Withdean was always at its best when it rained. The pitch was a gluepot in a memorable affair. Level at the break, Albion hit the gas and produced a fantastic second half display. Bobby grabbed two, before setting up Junior Lewis – what a player – on his debut to tap home. Reading were sent packing for the first defeat in 12 games. We would go on to win back2back titles, 6 points clear of Alan Pardew's Reading.

We know that Christmas is the time of gifts and cards, but ten for one team? The programme notes from the time say ‘Albion where nowhere near their best. It would probably be one of those games that would fade quickly into the memory if it hadn’t been for two talking points’ .

Firstly, referee Rejer booked 13 players, 10 of those from Exeter! . Paul Rogers was quite right ‘there wasn’t one of those for Exeter who didn’t deserve a booking. The only player not booked? Ex-Seagull Jamie Campbell, he scored an own goal from a Gary Hart cross. The other goal ‘marked by a firework from a nearby garden’ came from Dodge

fave bit being the spray off the net for Zamora's goal. Reading were a good side and we absolutely blew them out of the water

Was a big gamble from Taylor as he dropped Oatway and Rogers in favour of Lewis and Melton but it paid off

Reading and Alan Pardew.

I've never seen such wet goal nets as that evening. Every time we scored they shook like a dog coming in from the rain. It was important after a terrible 2-0 defeat up at freezing Oldham just two days earlier where Bobby Z got sent off.
