We all know the FA Cup has lost much of it's mystique and excitement over the years, but I was astonished to see how much (or ultimately how little) the winning team in this year's competition will get :

£1.8m ! Blimey I know it's not a huge draw today but you can see why many clubs take the approach they do nowadays.

Round Prize money
Extra preliminary round winners £1,125
Extra preliminary round losers £375
Preliminary round winners £1,444
Preliminary round losers £481
First qualifying round winners £2,250
First qualifying round losers £750
Second qualifying round winners £3,375
Second qualifying round losers £1,125
Third qualifying round winners £5,625
Third qualifying round losers £1,875
Fourth qualifying round winners £9,375
Fourth qualifying round losers £3,125
First round winners £16,972
First round losers £5,657
Second round winners £25,500
Second round losers £8,500
Third round winners £61,500
Third round losers £20,500
Fourth round winners £67,500
Fourth round losers £22,500
Fifth round winners £135,000
Fifth round losers £45,000
Quarter-final winners £360,000
Semi-final winners £900,000
Semi-final losers £450,000
Final runners-up £900,000
Final winners £1,800,000

So, if a Premier League team, entering at the third round of the FA Cup reaches the final and wins the competition, they would pocket a prize total of £3.4 million. The beaten finalists would end up with £2.4 million.

The Albion winning in the 3rd and 4th rounds and then losing in the 5th round get £174k. (A couple of weeks of Lallana's wages?)

I knew the FA Cup didn't offer major riches but in Premier League terms its tiny.

Well, you'd hope that the tournament itself was enough inspiration.

Sad times.

But you haven't added TV money which the PL deal does? Or crowds figures (normally) advertising and so on.

Granted that is an extra but as basic prize money when I read the article in this mornings paper I genuinely thought the table printed was from years ago. Just surprised that the prize for winning it in it's own right seems so small. Maguire and Pogba's combined wages for 1 month?

I think the opposite. Seems very good to me just spread out more. FA cup does a great job for lots of lower league clubs. £2/3K For an early win by a non league club goes a long way and t gate and TV money in later rounds can keep a club going for a couple of seasons.

I totally agree about the spread being far more even (which is a good thing) but it's little surprise why so many big clubs in the early rounds chance their arm and play very week sides until the later stages if they are still in it.

For the purposes of accuracy, it should be pointed out that the prize money for 2020-21 was halved compared to 2019-20 due to the effects of Covid-19.

For the purposes of accuracy, it should be pointed out that the prize money for 2020-21 was halved compared to 2019-20 due to the effects of Covid-19.

The FA doubled the prize money for the FA Cup from the 2018-19 season to try and get more clubs to take the competition seriously, so this reduction has brought the prize money back to pre 18-19 levels.
